urgent - Paint being rejected problem - Free six pack to first person who solves it

Hi guys, well my car is being painted this week and it has to be done this weekend only as its being done by a mate who has already given up enought of his own shed time to help me out.

Now all was going well, but when painting the shell (the rest has been done) the paingt is being rejected, scrunching up and raising

This is happening on areas where i have rubbed back to a previous layer. Its has a couple paint jobs and any paint i use on this exposed area is rejecting badly and ive unsucessfully tried to seal it off with:

- 2 pak primer
- can spary putty
- can clear
- can primer

Is there anything i can spray on to seal/block the areas off? I dont have the time to sand back the whole shell to bare metal. Its only going to be my hack car, but its very frustrating to have the rest of it looking reasonable and the rear quarters having pealing paint.

Is the spray putty 2 pak?

did you use uni prep (wax and grease remover) before spraying?

You could just block back the affected area , and prep that again

Did the primer react?

Was the previous paint acrylic?

Yeah i used wax and grease remover.

The primer i have used is 2pak, but i have tried other acrylic paints including the spray putty. All get rejected very badly. Im unsure what it it was sprayed with earlier, although it looks like shitty, terrible, demon acrylic.

Maybe i will get some 2 pac spray putty tomorrow and give that a go, is there any particular treatments to stop this from happening?

I could always try to put a thin layer of putty i have over the areas, but its very hard to just sand down these areas without removing paint in other levels.

you cant use acrylic over 2 pak primer

what brands are you using?

why are you calling it putty?

its either base coat or 2k

Warren and my brother will be working, they may be able to mix up and sell you some good paint and primer if u need it.

I dont have the paint as its at my mates shed. Although i have tried protech 2k primer and some 2k primer from paint supplies at hendon. Maybe the 2k spray putty is somthing to try...

i had a similar experience on another car i was prepping the primer kept scrunching, and what it ended up being, was that underneath the previous layer had been sprayed with some can based shit paint and hence the moment thinners hit it, the spray-can paint would slowly melt so to say. we ended up taking it all back to near metal and primering it.

Cant help you to much mate.
But i know different brand name products can react with other brands of undercoat and etch primers.

I remember somthing like spies hecker etch primer reacting with a basecoat of some sort.
Best thing to do is contact the tech which should be printed on the can label. If the products are half descent they will have a product legend on them and tell you what does and doesnt react with each other.

Yes i have had this prob before when there was acrylic under it.
you can get a grey sealing primer, it is expensive but works perfectly.
Any decent paint supply will have it or even get it off panel beater.
As i said it is expensive. Cant for the life of me remmeber what its called but its to seal the acrylic under it so you can put two pac on and its grey.

How cold are the panels when you're spraying them?

Wax and grease remover, warm up the panels, then hit it with some acrylic primer/filler (thinned to whatever needed) - or even paint it on with a brush, then sand back gently
