Thanks for all your input i appreciate it.

I think i will continue on with the grinder and discs. It takes a bit longer and gives you a saw back, but it only cost me $30 in discs to do the roof and there is a lot of paint on the shell. Also, at least this way i have found you can guage the pressure you apply quite easily.

    Thanks again

just wondering how much time you actually have to do bodywork and panel prep for paint after media/sand blasting is complete before the shell starts to rust properly and the blasting becomes useless?

    thanks

The blasters coat the shell with a treatment that protects it after it has been blasted. Im not sure on exactly what it is but if you are storing your car in a shed or something after you get it blasted it should be fine but if your gunna go put it in a paddock then im sure even the protective coating wont stop the rust.

If your talking about time you can wait till painting it my suggestion would be dont get it blasted till you have the time/money to get it painted very soon after.

We resto cars here for a living . And media blasting is the only way to go for the main shell. be carefull with bonnet & boot outer skins , sumtimes we paint strip them the old way.

But like anything its only as good as the operator.

We use an Epoxy urethane primer (PPG product) on all bare metal jobs, and as LEEROY said so long as the car's not used as a chicken roost outside, you will have no probs with the car sitting in this primer. Only thing is it cant be spray'd in the back yard .

Im doing all this at the moment... back yard job.

Im using a combo of paint stripper (with the glad-wrap trick), and a cheapo $80 bunnings orbital sander & 80 grit discs.

It does take a while, but does the job cheaply.

Im using Epotec 2pac primer and Protel Barrcryl 2pac top coat (both ICF, so safe for non-booth use).

There's also an abrasive sanding pad available from 3M products its sort of like scotch brite, but in a coarser more open texture & black in color .. Can be attached to an arbour & fitted up to a drill.. does a very good job, tears into bog & paint etc, only appears to just polish the steel very little removal ...
I would be pretty wary using 80 grit disc's that stuff loves to eat metal as well as the paint ..

Im using the white colored paint sanding discs.
I havent had any problem with it sanding back or gouging the metal.
