Don't Redline recommend MTL if you use their advice guide?

    Hi,

Is this so, Hoff? Did you use the wrong fluid for your gearbox?

In the Hoffs defence if any I would say his would be classed as a race application with the numbers he's turning out.... but maybe Redline wouldn't see it as so.

Trouble is they wont because it has syncros! Lol even was racing with a dog box, There is no warranty on race parts,Everything made has to have some sort of warranty but with racing they can get out of it very very easy.

Was there much metal when you dumped the Oil Hoff?

I will be using Redline MTL in my R154.

Yeah last time i listen to recomendations from people that own R154's.

And no, there was no metal at all, oil was perfect and blue, might have something to do with the rate i keep breaking things.

Box would be lucky to have seen 800km with that oil.

River - ha, you're awesome. You will feel my wrath one day old man.

it says in there that MTL is better for syncomesh. If this was the case MTL should yeild better shifting quality than lightweight shockproof. but it doesnt. explain that?

It is a given fact that lightweight shockproof improves shifting quality over MTL.

by "better for synchromesh", they probably mean "will not glaze synchros" , hence it is better

i dont understand how an oil could glaze syncro's when its actually helping them achieve better 'grip'.?

when something glazes its because its slipping and heating up correct? well wouldnt the oil with the poorest shifting quality more than likely cause this effect, not the oil actually making the gearbox 'work'? :|

I have had shockproof in this t50 for about 3000km's now. Shift quality was a noticable step up from Castrol Syntrax. Car doesnt do many road km's though.

Syncros need slip .. thats how.

I assume a thin oil is smoother but less of a coating and then thinner coats heat and glaze??

glen - do you mind disclosing how much your twin plate set you back?
I'll be needing a new clutch in the not too distant future, and I'm tossing up between a twin plate and getting a clutch place to build me a hybrid full-face (or button?) to deal with it... I'm guessing our setups will be making similar power/torque
