Hi Guys,
Just trying to do some digging around to get some solid information or links on what diagnostic protocol my car uses.
It's a 1996.6 Supra with the 2JZ-GE.
From all my readings on the net any car that is late '95 and '96 onwards should be OBD II, so mine should be OBDII...but I don't think it is....
I only have the TDLC connector(that I can find) inside the car for diagnostics, that's the 17 pin circular with a flat bottom connector that you would use for a hand scanner. I can't find the J1962M connector that is supposed to be the norm for ODB II these days, and I can't find a convertor cable for it either.
What's the reason behind all of this??? I have sourced a really good price on an Greddy Informeter which has lots of useful info that it can display, and is heaps cheaper(although less cool) than the Defi DIN guages I want.
But snag is none of the plugs on the Informeter are the round Toyota TDLC connect, and even if I can find a convertor cable, or make one, I'm not sure if my ECU is OBDII anyway. Date stamed on the side of it says 12/6/96?
Anyone have any good solid links on OBD II compliant Toyotas or any other links of interest to an OBD n00b?

I can't give you links to literature, but everything that I have seen (95 repair manual, lack of OBDII connector) points to yours not having OBDII. I certainly would not expect it to have it.
In the IS200 at least, the body ECU has the OBDII connector, and communicates with the engine ECU via the MPX network. If I had to make a guess at dates, I'd say 98 onwards is likely to have OBDII, but possibly it didn't change until the next version of a vehicle.
Do you have a link to the Informeter?

Yes the informeter is a bit ricy, but it does let you access alot of good core car systems...

So it would seem that I'm OBD 1, which makes me very sadI know the newer VVTi JZA80's definately have both ports, but mine, even though it's the 2nd Gen JZA80 doesn't

not many toyotas in australia have obd2 unless its pretty new
only in USA it is common for obd2 cause tey will not let u make or import a new car there unless it has obd2
so yrs will have the basic toyota tdlc i have a snap on scanner and it plugs into the round plug which i have wired in which usually sits under the steering column area
so yrs should be the same
its ok for live data but bit slow i just stick to using multimeter
sometimes its not the year of car its which country it is goin to that determines what plug it has
Thanks sideshow, yes I've had a really really good look for that plug, and it just aint there., Better start my saving for my nice little Defi 3 guage DIN set![]()
dont waste money on thos expensive gauges
unless yr car fuks it all the time then they are waste of money
but there has to be a plug somewhere under the dash i just checked my diagrams and it say it has a tdlc plug so maybe remove the cover under steering wheel
Yea sideshow it does have the TDLC, but that isn't compatible with the informeter![]()
my snap on scanner can talk to the tdlc what do u need it for
its just live data crap that is only helpful when there is a problem and even then its half useless
Hi Sideshow, it was to attach a Greddy informeter, so I could set it up in my car and keep an eye on the "vitals" (oil pres, water temp etc.) whilst driving, it gets all it's data from the OBDII and shows what you select in graphs, numbers etc. and you can set thresholds on values etc. would have been handy, but it just won't work with my car
Can't complain about TDLC too much, it found and correctly diagnosed my faulty o2 sensors.
i know what greddy infometer is
i have ordered one nothing to fancy
it wont do oil press im pretty sure as no toyota ecu reads oil press that i commonly wire up
the screen is pretty small aswell
but im sure yr ecu is not odb2 compliant
im buying a special cable and software to use my laptop to connect to obd2 compliant cars so that means mainly for fords and holdens and some new jap crap
but obd2 is mainly for usa cars as they made a law yrs ago that cars need obd2 plug so its common aswell otherwise they will not be allowed to sell cars without odb2 plug
they got sick of havin a scanner with 40 different plugs for different cars
