Either heli-coil, or some LocTite (forget the number).
Personally, I'd helicoil it.
I was reliably informed that I had a leak in my turbo manifold on the ST185 Group A due to broken studs.
Upon removing the manifold, no studs appear to be broken. However, one of the studs felt a bit 'loose' in the head and when I pulled it out, looked like it had been cross threadedAlso it looks like the leak may have been in that area.
Here is a pic of the dodgy one (left) next to a 'good' one.
I managed to screw another stud in the same hole with no problems, so the thread should not be toooo bad.
Just wondering:
- Should I use Heli-coils or similar on that hole?
- Should I replace the other studs as well?
- Should I consider using heli-coil on the other studs too?
Any advice and assistance is always appreciated![]()

with the locktite, theres a couple of different versions of it.
the main two being blue (semi permanant) and red (permanant)
i suggest using the red stuff, although it says its permanant, some heat and elbow grease will undo it.
Eldar.O.
Do it properly and heli-coil it, the stress on the bolts its pretty good when the manafold heats up and grows, if you short cut it now you will be doing it all again in no time.

Ouch, looks like the thread came out. This isn't uncommon on alloy heads, and I don't think it is due to crossthreading.
You should check how deep the holes are --- if there is enough thread at the bottom of the hole, a longer stud might be an option.
Otherwise, you'll definitely need to helicoil it. I don't think there would be much value in helicoiling all of them, although you might find more do the same thing when you remove them, so I'd take the whole thing off before going shopping.
Ouch!
Heli-coil that thread, no point helicoiling the rest.
Thanks for the advice guys!
I bought a powercoil thread repair kit, they are made by Bordo Industrial Tools. Also picked up some Loctite 262 Super Stud lock.
Plan is to skim the turbo manifold, coil the dodgy hole, replace gaskets (on order from Toyota), use a new stud and bolt in the repaired hole and get it all back together.
Hopefully won't be too long before I can drive my baby again![]()
If you want a stud, then a stud you shall have!

Helicoil it, and then loctite just to be sure. Like the irish. To be sure, to be sure.
And here is your spare stud:

Have I started something that could readily get out of hand here??

I think you have shinny, you are a bad bad man.
Lets keep this thread on topic, and remove our pictures as hard as that may be. Either that or thumbnnail them.

Thanks guys - I was waiting for something like that!
Thanks again for the advice.
Sorry to revive this thread guys, but I have two more stupid stud-related questions![]()
- What is the best method for removing studs? I was just going to use the 'pliers on the end of the stud and turn it' approach. Is there a better way?
- Is it worth replacing all 7 manifold studs while I can?
- What is a good option for studs? I am having a hard time finding any and not sure whether Genuine Toyota is the way to go?
Thanks again for the help![]()

no, you'll ruin any useful studs doing that.
Wind on two nuts onto the stud and tighten them against each other, then wind the stud out of the head with a ring spanner on the nut closest to the head. It might help if you get a squirt of innox/WD40 down into the thread going into the head and let it soak for a while first.

no, proper helicoiling isn't cheap - only fix the ones that are stuffed.

you 'should' be able to get exhaust studs from any suparcrap or aurtobarn store. In those silly rotating displays of nuts/bolts/washers/etc they'll also have stud sets (usually 2 studs and nuts to suit). Failing that, try a decent zorst shop.
cheers,

Thanks Charles.
Yeah, I thought of another one while I was typing![]()
Wasn't planning to heli-coil all of the threads, but I was wondering if it was a good idea to put new studs and nuts in each one.
