    Default 4AGZE 212mm vs 200mm flywheel

    Hey Guys,

I'm in the process of prepring a GZE to put into a AE86 and I was wondering what experiences people have had with clutches and flywheels.

I have a 200mm flywheel at present and I am considering the idea of upgrading to a 212mm flywheel and trying to decide if its worth forking out for the 212 option.
(Of course if anyone has a 212mm flywheel lying around I am quite prepared to take it off your hands)

Obviously the 212mm is going to be the better of the two, with the extra 12mm of diameter for the clutch to bite.

But how much difference does it really make?

I will be using a new button clutch, with a hardcore pressure plate, and hopefully the car will be making somewhere between 110-130kw atw.

The car is daily driven with frequent drift and track use.

Anyways, any experiences/comments would be much appreciated

    cheers

This thread should give you a good idea...

I would go for the 215 flywheel at minimum. You could always go a higher clamp load on a smaller surface but then the flywheel will wear quicker and the pedal feel will get heavier. Better to put less stress on it in the 1st place.

    hey.
i have an GZE i am putting back into my 86. i have a 200mm flywheel cause im pretty sure that you cant fit a 212mm flywheel in a T-50 bell housing. (correct me if i am wrong).

I will be upgrading to a W-57 box, which i already have. at the moment tho i am using the 200mm flywheel and an extreme clutch 4 puck plate and custom pressure plate.

Use a W box first up - save having to change everything again a short time later.

Slide - A believe a 212mm will fit a T50 housing. It is just the 224 ZE one that won't. However I have never tried it myself.

Craigy - I hammered a 200mm flywheel and full face organic clutch for a year with 110rwkw (ok, I hadn't learnt to clutch kick lots then) before I took it out. Never had any problems and it is still alive. Others have also done similar (just read that thread) and I'm sure you could get a suitable and reliable clutch combo working on a 200mm.

On the other hand you may as well do it properly while you have the engine out. $50 for another flywheel now is good insurance against rooted clutches and having to change the bloody things down the track.

I guess at the end of the day it comes down to cost and compromising a little.

I know down the track that I will have to go with the W58 box with a larger flywheel. But it means...

    gearbox $300-$500

    tailshaft modification $50+

    custom gearbox mount (free)

    larger flywheel ($100-200)

    clutch $300-$500

So i'm staring down the barrel of spending another $1000+ when I could go with the 200mm with a Heavy, 4 puck clutch and it will probably only cost me about $300-$500

Call me a stingy bastard but hey, beer is important too. hehe

Keep the comment coming guys, interested in what you have experienced.

    cheers

212mm definately fits in a T50, and i would heartily reccomend it.

I guess its all about how you drive. I have a 212mm in my 4AG, but its a grumpy large cammed NA with a 3kg flywheel. It has enough issues without losing surface area to slip the clutch with for starts.

My FWD GZE ran the 224mm fly with a 3puck button and a 4400lbs TRD pressure plate. It was heavy as hell, but held up really well, and gave my leg a workout while it was at it. It was reasonably easy to slip once i figured out the pressures and how to do it.

I use the 212mm AE101 Flywheel behind my 20V 4AGE + T50 in my 86 and it works fine. I'm using a Xtreme Clutch Pressure Plate (30% heavier or something) + an Exedy full face organic clutch disc. It's nice and bitey, without killing my left leg. It certainly doesn't slip behind my NA motor, at any revs.

The 3TGTE has a 200mm flywheel + clutch and it puts out a fair whack of torque, I'm sure a 4AGZE will put out a similar amount of torque. So a 200mm fly /clutch will certainly work.

As everyone else has siad, bigger flywheel = better for clutch life and feel. I'd go for the 212mm if you can get one (normally on the old forums they went for around $50)

I personally would go for the 200mm flywheel. It "feels" it want to rev quicker, respond better.
if you put a decent clutch in it, it will still bite good.

And yeah, I have fit both 200 and 212mm flywheel on a T50, they both fit fine.

i dont see how you can say that seeing as the guy who sells aftermarket 4A gear in singapore has a TODA 3.6kg 200mm flywheel for sale.

And there is a TODA 200mm flywheel lying on the floor at the workshop which my car is stored at.

Mmm, before you make any more posts go read the Guidelinesosting in Tech and Conversions thread at the top of the forum.
