I have had a bit of an interest in these for a while, and need a car that I can transport stuff in.

Something about a 4wd Corolla intrigues me. More to play with.
If I get it, it'll let me take my time with the Levin. Gotta have a look at it (only seen it from the street) but I can sort pretty much anything that could be wrong. Plus I know what to look for to knock the price down.

There a good medium sized work horse, zippy in traffic when kept well tuned.
1st gear is very unusual for street. I think it's meant more for making it up hills easily.
Don't know what the gear ratio is but it's pretty low.
1st & 2nd sound like you're murdering them but when you look at the speedo

The single most common universal defect is a lot of them have a cracked exhaust manifold.

If your thinking of buying one & the OEM manifold has one of those insulation shields covering it, you should still be able smell if it's leaking or not.

    or

when it's idling you can just tap the accelerator with your foot & see if it backfires in anyway

Had a closer look at it. Looks like standard AE92/95 fare, in typical condition for it's age.
Slight cracks in the dash, but the interior looks like it'll come up nice with a good clean (carpet cleaners from Woolworths ftw).

It does need a new battery and rear windscreen though. Getting a price from Toyota. I have to sort a blueslip and rego too, but that's no biggie.

Oh, and it's an auto... Are manual conversions hard to do?

    [edit]
Scratch all that, just found another one nearby in full working order that is a manual too.

Yeah they're very similar up the front end.
Forgot to mention the dash also being the most commonly damaged part.
I did flexi bog & repaint repair on my dash which has held up fine, but since then I've come across a few mint condition dashes in other corollas at my local self serve wreckers.

I'd suggest you leave this one alone for a number of reasons.
It's the first one you've looked at. It might be a good idea to look around for some others to compare with.

The main reason I'd suggest avoiding this one is coz it's an auto. From what you said, it sounds like you'd like to pick up an affordable work horse with minimum of fuss so there's more time left to work on the Levin..

Ah whoops just saw your edit - way to go mate...

Those cams were designed for supercharge use because they minimize overlap. You can see this in the cam timing allows for nearly no overlap. This allows for the most pressure in low rpm use, and is part of the reason many folks argue for turbocharging in conjunction with the 4AGE... because the turbo and the 4AGE are both more suited to higher rpm usage, then lower rpm usage.

*IF* I were keeping it S/Ced, I'd call around to custom cam makers and see who will build you tall lift cams while keeping duration to a minimum.

Terra, or PCW (for that matter)... Project Mu has brake upgrades for the AE95....

I went with the NS pads, and the matching rear shoes. You can also bump this upgrade(NS) to the B-Stop, if you plan on even more severe braking....

Thanks for the tip Old skewl

Re: my original bigport idea - I've had a complete turn around.

I wouldn't need the long runners for torque. Obviously the sc14 will take care of that.

I found an interesting Utube clip re: bigport & small port intake - Actually a combo of the 2

Lukeae86 'd probably be interested too:

Haven't done much in a while ... as mentioned some time ago, the engine oil was entirely dried up & there was a lot of rust on the clutch & flywheel.

Here's a few pics of the flywheel all cleaned up.

It's become nearly impossible to find an AE95 SR5 anywhere in australia that has a steel slide back sun roof ..or any sunroof for that matter.
So I've asked the guy in Adelaide who wants top dollar to send me some pics
(found out about it through an ebayer who was the former owner)

Thinking of biting the bullet getting a cheap flight to Adelaide paying the $$ & driving it back..
It's a lot more than I wanted to spend but I really want to get moving with this project..

By the way...while I've been searching hi & lo for an AE95 with sunroof I came across this old ebay picture... can't contact seller as item no longer exists..

Does anyone recognise the type of wheels he's running?

I don't know what the offset is for AE95's but I want to fit those rubber strips you see on 4wd wheel arches that allow you to run with a wider tyre.
I like the old school negative offset look & was wondering if anyone recognised these mags & could tell me a bit more about them??

They look like standard 13" diameter & stud pattern would be standard 4 x 100...
