Default A340 problem - limp mode

My A340 is stuck in limp mode whilst in D, only has o/d.
There are no error codes coming up.
1st & 2nd work fine when selected manually, reverse is fine.
Solenoids changed but same problem exists.
About two days before this issue my tacho was going crazy by jumping all over the place & generally showing higher than actual rpm.
Has one affected the other in some way?

Is your gearbox controlled by the factory ECU?

Factory ECU decides on gear selection based on road speed, throttle position and water temp only. It doesn't use the RPM to work out shift points.

    <thread hijack>

Sorry I thought this was about getting that Airbus A340 that scraped the tail in Melbourne back to Toulouse.

    hey, had a similar problem..

check the speed sensor wire to the ECU, mine was cut when moving some stuff around and the car didnt want to drive in D... didnt behave properly, acted like a hi-stall box..

    Good luck...

also the problem can be fixed by fitting a manual gearbox

Have you checked that the cable at the throttle valve on the inlet mahifold has not broken, fallen off or is way out of adjustment. Also, I trust you did not pop it off inside the gearbox when you changed the solenoid valves.

Is this gearbox on your Cressida?

Does the O/D Off light flash, if it does that means there is ECT Errors.

If it were a severed wire, I'd think the gearbox should give out error codes. Other than that I think it could be as Peter goudie suggested, the kickdown cable.

    The gearbox cable is fine.
Will have it properly checked next week as I believe it is probably a faulty speed sensor.
The diagnostic port was disconnected during the conversion hence no error codes

You might get some ideas from the service manual at this site http://www.wjw.co.uk/Toyota/95%20Sup...%202JZ-GTE.pdf
    Good luck.

I wish you would have told us all in the first place that not everything is connected. You should now look at those solenoid valves. You can check their continuity at the ecu plug. Sounds a lot like a bad earth or failed solder joint on one or both solenoids.

I agree with Petergoudie, was exactly what was the problem with my A340E. The black coating on the part of the solenoid where the bolt goes on was causing a bad ground, I simply scraped it away with some sandpaper, and also sanded the bolt to reveal some metal.
