Toyota 5M-E Head gasket bolt torque Setting.
What is the best Torque setting for the 5M-E head bolts?
I know the book has a range up to 61 Ft/lb but this is 30 years old and the gasket these days are much better that the original factory items, the book also refers to using a liquid sealer on the head gasket, This liquid sealer is now discontinued by Toyota with no listed alternative.
I was more wondering if people have torqued their head bolts a little more than factory.
And what settings have they used and what have been the results to date.
From memory, shop manual states 58ft-lb but most tension them to 77ft-lb with new bolts, just make sure you clean the threads in the block and old bolts if using, and apply plenty of oil to the thread and under head of bolt, no need for fancy lubricant.
As for sealant, a good spray of hylomar coating both sides and all of the gasket is good insurance.
