Default Celsior 1UZ Trans + Hilux Electronic Speedo Configuration

    Hi Guys,

We have just about completed my mates 1UZ Hilux conversion, but have an issue with the Speedo.
As best as I can tell, the Celsior Auto trans speedo sender No1. (Back of the box, with cogs) sends out a 20 pulse signal to the cluster, which then converts and sends a 4 pulse signal to the ECU to gauge the speed the car is going.

I havent been able to find anything to completely confirm it, but the Hilux cluster (We have an electronic cluster from a RV6 4runner) seems to expect a 4 pulse signal from the speed sender.

Taking off in the car, the speedo sits at about 0, then jumps very quickly up to over 100klm/hr and the climbs from there.
The trans, thinking the car is going that quickly, then quickly jumps into a higher gear, and accelerates very slowly from there.

I was looking at getting a sender from another vehicle, but wasn't sure what was suitable. Seems that the one from the Cressida is also a 20 pulse sender.

Can I get some clarification, or suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Herus

Most of em use a 4 ppr speedo signal, only a few cars seem to use the 20ppr.

JZA80 manual W58 should have the right speedo sensor for you mate. (I'm sure it's used elsewhere, I just know this one because I have pulled one off one and tested it)

Looks like the top speedo drive in this pic.

most jap cars use 20 pulse
cressidas and hiluxes and hiaces use 4 pulse
get a 4 pulse unit of a cressida auto
run the signal to your speedo
and also to spd on the ecu
    or dont hook up spd
u should still have sp2 + sp2- hooked up unless u fkt it off when u did a transfer case swap

so must have something missing or a conflict if its changing gears to fast
try just running the sp2 sensor which goes direct to the ecu
get it changing gears on this first then hook up the 4 pulse to spd on the ecu

    Hey Mate,

I was thinking the W58 would be wrong, and the drive gear is a different ratio?
From what I understand, the Manual boxes use a 30/10 type ratio, where as the Autos use a 19/6, etc.

I have a Cressida one here that I can install and test with.
The Cluster does have a 4P out, should I use this to run to the ECU? Or just run it from the sender?

FYI, The site I got the 20 pulse information from is here.

sorry i just edited my post
yer most toyota jap imports are 20 pulse
remove the one peice electric sender and gear unit
and fit the cressida gear drive and body and the screw on speed sensor its 4 pulse
    this will goto your speedo
then run the 4 p from the speedo output to the ecu but i would leave it off till u make sure the sp2 sensor works fine first

As its a 4x2, there isnt a transfer case to worry about, so nothing would have changed there.

Ill depin the connection from the cluster to the ECU, so that it doesnt cause other issues.
    This would be my conflict.

Will try that tonight and report back.

    Worked like a charm!
Havent road tested it yet, but the speedo didnt jump up to 100 when we were idling on stands.

    Thanks!

I might have a fairly simple solution to this.

Can you measure the dimensions of the Celsior speedo sender assy and let me know the details as for some reason now I seem to have a collection of Surf/4runner senders (transducer if you want to get technical), I'm thinking that a "Guts swap" may be able to be done and why I need the dimensions is I think that I may have a Celsior sender somewhere yet I think that they may be PDC. Also a tooth count from the driven gear and leave the speedo error for mow as I might have a better answer there yet but need to pull a certain 4runner apart first

u can buy new screw on 4 pulse speed sensors
will screw onto any japanese type threaded speedo drive
the hard bit to find is the gear and the body which has the screw on bit
i really should goto wreckers and raid all the cressida gear drives and sensors
other way around it is get a digital signal converter and set it to divide by 5
    when running 20 pulse signal
in the end price differnece is similar if u have to buy from wreckers of new
so theres more than one way to skin a cat
