It never rains it pours. Have started another thread here because of a different issue with my Corona.
I gave my motor a high pressure clean on friday.Since that day it's run rough on startup but after a little while it runs ok, but, has started to idle roughly at lights etc
This morning (sunday) I took the radiator cap off and the radiators empty.I'm starting to think the heads cracked, but, can you crack an alloy head by washing it ????
Thing is the head on it is has only done around 20,000 k's and I can't believe I've cracked it by giving it a (expletive deleted) wash.
Apart from radiator hoses leaking and the head being cracked, is there any other way to lose coolant ????

Unless you washed the engine when it was hot with cold water then it should be fine man.
Get the cooling system pressure tested. Apart from hoses, heater, head,block there isn't anywhere else the water is going to go.

Just had a thought. For a little while now I've had what I thought was a leak in the manifold gasket. Could never quite pin down where the not very loud hiss was coming from.
Maybe that hiss was in fact the beginning of the end for the head gasket ? In saying that though I do have a vacuum gauge in the car that indicates nothing out of the ordinary.
What confuses me is the car runs like nothing is wrong after 10 seconds or so though with the radiator being empty today I'm reluctant to fill it and start it up. Don't want to do any more damage than is already done, whatever that damage may be.

edit - seing as the head was only done 20,000k's ago... is it possible for the 22re's to leak water from the timing cover? im pritty sure there chain driven arent they?
I believe that the chain can wear through a water gallery... most engine shops could weld it up for you.
you say the head is only 20 000 ks old... do you mean its only been on your motor for that time (but is a second hand head) or that the head was purchased new? (IE Chinese )... if its a chinese head... all bets are off, they make some truly spectacular crap.
Close enough to that many. The head was supposed to be a new one. As to whether it was made in China or not I've no idea. I'm hoping I've just done a head gasket. there's definately water in the oil.
I pulled the rocker cover off today and one of the timing chain guides is almost non existent. Once I pull it to bits I'll get a better idea of what's happened, hopefully.

You may be right though I'm hoping that's not the case.
I have a timing chain kit and 261c cam from engbldr that I was going to install without taking the head off. That plan has changed now. I'm reasonably sure I've done a head gasket.
What I do know is I've have snapped the ratchet on my socket set when I put it on the nut holding the harmonic balancer on or whatever it is. Put it on with a breaker bar on the sub frame as recommended and SNAP !!!!! Nut not loosened and ratchet now rat shit.
Ah well.

Ok i remember back a few years now i read a article in zoom magazine. The car was a navara but similar sort of problem...
The guys timing chain guide had failed and he had kept driving. Eventually the chain rubbed through the case and opened up a water gallery in the front of the head, then mixing oil and water together. So a two dollar part caused far more $$$ worth of damage. :O
for those who are a little more knowing of the insides of a 22R-E does a water gallery run anywhere near the front of the head/timing case?
Oh and harmonic balancer nuts, always use a rattle gun or LONG breaker bar![]()

yes they do. due to toyotas major epic fail fitting a single row chain. the chain stretches, the guides smash to peices and the chain slaps against the inside of the timing cover. it will rattle for about 5 secs on start up.
if u leave it too long all the coolant will end up in the sump : (

yes it definately does, though a good rattle gun it generally wont matter, however if your gun is a supercheap special it will probably be needed.
A little update here. As I can't get a few bits until thursday my aim was just to pull it to bits and check things out. Wanted to see how much if any damage that loose timing chain had done.
The things I've discovered so far are:
I tried 3 things to get that (expletive deleted) nut off the crankshaft. First attempt I used my 3/8" ratchet with a pipe over it wedged onto the subframe. Hit the ignition switch, snapped the ratchet. 2nd attempt went and bought a breaker bar from Gasweld. Had to get a 1/2" as they didn't have a 3/8". Bought a 1/2" to 3/8" thingy so I could attach my 3/8" 19mm socket. Wedged the bar against the subframe cranked it over and snapped the 1/2" to 3/8" thingy. 3rd attempt I went back to Gasweld, bought a 1/2" 19mm socket that fitted straight onto the bar, wedged the bar onto the subframe cranked it over and the nut just came loose. Too easy if you do it right the first time. Moral to that story is, I'm an idiot.
Now I'm in the process off removing the air conditioner. Have discovered that's an impossibility with sockets. Need a 14mm ring spanner. Off to buy one of them now. (expletive deleted) cars.

Ring spanners are the best thing since sliced bread, make sure you get a decent set(one) as cheap ones fuck out easy and need more degree of movment to "rachet" if you get my drift!
