Hey guys,
Found out today my ga70 has a blown headgasket and im after some opinions on what to do. I thought about the 1jz conversion but i cannot have my car off the road for that long cause i use it as my daily. If i decide to just replace the headgasket i will be pulling most of it apart myself but getting sum1 qualified to do the hard work on the head. I know ill have to get the head machined, buy a new gasket, new coolant/oil and head studs. Is there anything else i will have to buy and can anyone give me a rough price on what its costed them to change the head gasket?
cheers tom
Might as well get it checked out, clearances on shims etc. Get her cleaned up and surfaces machined. Make sure to check your cam lobes, several of mine had become tapered and wore down the shims which caused a whole lot of hurt when they popped off the top of the buckets.
If you need new valves, shims or buckets use blue top 4a kit, works with the 1g and there is more of a range to choose from when it comes to the shim sizing, also cheaper and easier to find.
Buy a TGP head gasket set, cost me ~250NZD. Has everything you are going to need except head studs.
Stick with the 1G, with only a few mods they can become a really fun engine to drive, just need to get them revving happier.

Where bouts in QLD are you? Are you sure it's a head gasket?
Hello.
kedderz- my engine is a gen1
willwal98- im in brisbanes southside
Ive decided to fix the head gasket and keep the engine. Would i be able to get away with a genuine head gasket from toyota even though im running a big single with around 270hp?
Stock head gasket is fine for your HP.
