Here is the go, this gearbox came free with my hatch when i baught it, i was told it was a LSD box, and as far as i knew at the time it was, (shafts wernt supplied).
I pulled it apart today because it will need a reco and the seals were perished, dirt and other nasty's have gotten inside so i thought i had better start investigating the diff just to be sure
As far as i know there is no sure way to tell the LSD boxes apart when they are assembled so i am hoping someone can shed some light on this dissasembled one.
I have stuck my finger in and spun one of the sets of splines and the opposite side turns the opposite way,
There is a lot of conflicting information on the net about the identification of these boxes so im out to sort the myth from facts.
The E58 LSD and E58 non-LSD gearboxes have different output splines for the CV shafts.
Once upon a time i had a picture of the LSD shafts showing the diameter of the spline that goes into the gearbox.... but i cant find the bloody pic now of course!!!
THe LSD version definitely has a larger diameter spline for the output.
...... butt scratcher?!
So it is really only the output spline size that varied between the 2?
As far as i can work out this sucka i have pulled apart is a non LSD, I just tried to put My LSD shafts in and as much as i fucked with it it never slotted it, i got out the verniers and the shaft is only sliding up to the spline slots.
So i guess my next question is what is the difference between the E58 housing being non LSD to that of a LSD one? is it only the diff center that varies?
Does the same 'bar through the middle' thing apply with E58s as they do E153's? As far as i knew, if you can see unobstructed through the diff, its an open, if it has a bar down the guts, then its a limo.

Nah that is one of those shreds of misinformation which seem never to die. Seen many E series diffs without the hex bar which had limo diffs in them, including my own (trd mechanical) and kyles (toyota viscous)
This diff looks exactly the same as my E51 in my AW11, feels and acts like an lsd out of the car, however not strong lsd action while driving.
So many different options with these bloody things, large metal hole like above, small metal hole, black thin disc with hole in the middle, and then the bar going across.
pull the centre apart. find out for sure.
