How hard would it be to put in a 3T into an RA40. Any special mods, with engine mounts, gearbox. any info would be great. Thanks.
To start with, an RA40 has an R series motor in it. Clearly you already know this, but I'm just stating the point.
R series motors are different to T series motors, differnet engine mounts, probably different sump setup for cross members, definately different gearbox.
The 3T is a good motor, but you'll find that the 1g also fits into the ra40, and in my opinion is a better motor. Plus it's got two extra cylinders..
for the complexity of conversion you'll have to go through to fit a 3t into a ra40, you will do the same to fit a 1g into an ra40. I'd be going the 1g route.
Unless ofcourse your 3t is going to be carby fed, which means then you won't have to go down the fuel system upgrade path. Clearly you WILL have to do this if you are using EFI 3t or 1g.
Put Simply, in answer to your question, for a 3T into an RA40 you will have to modify your engine mounts and probably cross member/sump. You will ofcourse have to get a T series gearbox to match the 3t as I imagine connecting your W50 to the 3T would be a little difficult, and not worth it. Subsequently you will need to modify your gearbox cross member to fit the T series box. Probably a different length tail shaft too...
For all that stuffing around, seriously mate, the 1g is a better route.
For a rough installation guide of a 1g into a ra23 (which will be very similar to an RA40 cept you'll have more room in the ra40)

id have to agree that a 1ggte is better (ive done it) then the 3tgte.
im also assuming your talking about a 3tgte, if it was a 3tc/g then dont bother!
id estimate there is about as much work in each, maybe less in the 3t. but at the end of the day, the 1ggte would be the winner for its smoothness, power, sound etc.
to do the 3tgte:
-find TA23 celica xmember and bolt that in. they are fairly rare now but you might find one
-make custom xmember to fit a T50 gearbox(T50's are crap though) - youll also need a custom tailshaft for this.
or, the better option, fit a W55/58 with a 1ggte bellhousing. note: 1g and 3t bellhousings are identical pattern
-wire everything up
-connect the fuel system up
-plumb up the intercooler
-etc.
to fit a 1ggte
read this: http://www.toymods.org.au/Darren/
after all the effort you'd put into a 3tgte, you only have 160hp@600 and 152lb-ft@4800
where as with the 1ggte you have 210hp@6200 and 203lb-ft@3800![]()
regardless, you have to
1. change gbox
2. EFi- friendly the fuel system
3. make up some intercooler plumbing
4. custom exhaust
5. wire the engine up
6. other stuff
hello
Thanks for the info , sounds definatly likes the 1g is the way to go.

pm 3t-ra40 I have a funny feeling he has a 3t....and an ra40(AND IRS (but that is digressing))
he should have a fair idea on everything.
I don't know about insurance side as both motors are turbo, but registration I assume would be cheaper witha 3t-gte (4cyl vs. 6cyl).
your crossmember issue may be the hardest to get around. 1gggte's can be fitted to R series crossmembers.
I haven't heard of T series engines being fitted to antything other than T series crossmembers however.
to the guys that have done it (well at least the 1 g anyway)....surely i would have thought with the right crossmember the 3t would have fitted straight in with no mods what so ever
ta23 crossmember
ta23 engine mounts
3t-gte engine and it should be good?
I have all this in the shed yet have never physically tried to fit it due to not having a gearbox for it...i guess that must be where the difference is, in the gearbox crossmember..
Rego is no different in vic 4 or 6 cyl..

is yours based on capacity then?
so 3t (1.8L) would fall into the same catagory as 1g (2L)
dang that system is soo much better than cylinder count.
it's a light vehicle rego. Completely irrespective of capacity.
