ok i have an engine installed in my ae86 (4age, 100kw block, bigport head), but the motor has been sitting around for about 1 year and not been started.
any advise on an oil i should run?
i was just going to throw some shitty penrite yellow in it then use some synthetic 5W after about 1000km's.

Wouldn't it be best to run thinner stuff in it to begin with to make sure it gets back into all those little tight spots where oil probably hasn't been and it's dried up?
I might be completely wrong in my theory though.
That said, a thicker oil will get rid of all the junk in there.

Use a good high detergent synthetic oil like Mobil1. It will clean out any built up gunk in the engine. Change it early (1000km or so).

no worries mate, so change it early to a good synthetic?
thanks

And give it a dose of that Nulon engine oil flush before you drop it. I did that, and my oil is quite clean as a result.

i might just run the oil for like 1 day, flush and refill, then after 1000km change it. i have no idea about how much crud could be in there.
i also have a bottle of subaru upper engine cleaner/treatment that might help. (it flushes out a fair bit of crap)

I'd probably leave it for a bit more than 1 day - it wont have much of a chance to lift anything.
Fresh oil and a new filter should be fine for 500-1000km. If you are really paranoid leave it for a week or two.

Use a thin oil to start with, since its been a while from when it was last running, if you use a thick oil it will strain the motor and it might break something. So run the thin oil for a while (don't be surprised if its gone in a week) then grab some thicker oil and run it on that and she should be sweet.
Make sure that before you start it you drop a little oil down the bores and then crank it over about 10-15 times by hand. I run magnatec in my 100kw and its pretty good. I've also given it one of those 80,000km nulon engine treatments. Put some high detergent oil in like Starfire said. I've also heard that a little diesel is good for cleaning engines - Could someone please clarify this?

how does that work?Originally Posted by Unforgiven
as Leeroy said, put a little oil down the bores and crank over so the bores don't score on startup (and also oil gets pumped into galleries so the bearings don't score on startup either..)
run.... oil
diesel thins the oil and can help loosen gunk...
what gunk/rubbish are you expecting to be inside the engine?
run (as said) high det oil, and check it's condition as you goif it starts to colour.. change it....
