As the title says. Could you please post name of companies i'm gonna need to get my soarer's tailshaft lengthened as i pretty much have sourced all the parts nessesary for a w58 conversion.
THanks for your input
I can't remember the name, but the place I used was in Chifley drive, Preston. West side of the road.
I'd recommend just finding a local place and talking to them. Plenty of places can do it, and there really shouldn't be much difference in the quality of the finished product.
Hen
thanks mate. By the way do you have any idea on the cost if using all the same uni-joints etc?
Off the top of my head, I was charged $300. I supplied the yoke, they supplied the diff end uni (the T18 one I took was laughed at) and made up the whole lot and balanced it. So slightly cheaper if you supply both unis. Slightly more expensive if they need to put a diameter step in it. 24hour turn around too.
The guys were old racing fellas. Not into bling or bullshit, so I got a good impression.
Hen
thanks hen. I guess this was for a one piece shaft. I'm just after the half closetst to the gear box lengthend by like 50 mill or so. I guess that constitutes a whole new shaft, i really have no idea but we'll see how things go.
THanks again
Yeah, mine was a 1piece. Not very different for you, just take the front section in and ask them to make it "X"mm long. They will replace the entire tube section, not just tack an extra 50mm on the end. Just get a precise measurement of the length you want it (centre pin of uni to centre pin of uni) and they'll make it spot on.
Hen
PS, just realised the front section may have a rigid plate, not a uni at the rear end. In which case you'll probably need to measure from the flat face of that to the pin in the uni of the gearbox yoke. But in any case, talk to your chosen tailshaft place and get their advice.

Has a fibreglass MR2 on a spaceframe with some Motec powered Ford twin cam.
rob check the centre bearing for the drive shaft before u do anything as if its work out its better if u got a single piece tailshaft made up so then it eliminates the centre bearing altogeter
thats what im doing atm as my centre bearing is fubared big time
while ur at it change the rear main seal as well i think corolla one fits straight in dunno what year though
im also using the w58 box but off a ma70 non turbo and also the same clutch that came with it , hopefully it will fit and not slip
also what are doing for the center gear shifter console
Place in Townsville called Hardy Spicer, i believe they can be found all over the country. They specialise in trucks, but will do anything. Great workmanship, and great price found.

Balancing Services Australia, Chifley Drive, Preston sounds good as its not too far away. I keep on hearing about the centre bearing being fucked but why arent you guys changeing them rather than getting a whole single tail shaft made? I was under the impression that a two piece shaft was good as it reduced vibration.
I will also be changing the rear main seal.
Also about the auto surround. Yeah i dont know, i was thinking of cutting the auto one with a cut off wheel on a dremel tool, but then i am unsure how to get a boot to match up. I have never seen how leather boots are actually held on soo i dont know.
centre bearings are teh pOOn. they always fuck up, and they create an extra friction point. a single peice tailshaft if balanced well wont be too bad for vibration, its the lenght that makes them split them up, but even that isnt too much of a problem, just look at the fraud fairlanes, they are single peice, and about 3kms long. a single peice shaft has 2 unis, whereas a 2 piece has 3 unis and a centre bearing. so there are really 2 extra friction points in a split shaft... and 2 extra things which fuck up. Single peice all the way.

my new single piece tail shaft cost me 370 dllars this morning , its got new unis as well
also rob be carefull when ding the conversion
lots of shit will fcuk up be prepared
mine on the hoist atm getting converted
clutch from a ma70 non turbo wont fit
So new clutch this morning heavy duty $340 for a daikin heavy duty one
Some spacer had to be modified to get the bellhousing to fit properly ,
Bell housing bolts from auto wont fit manual need new ones
Supra w58 from ma70 fits perfectly with the right shifter position
Electrician will be needed to get the automatic shifter wires to be rewired so the car starts – god knows how much that will be –unless u want to doa dodgy job and cut and join them or something
Another little metal plate will be needed to block some area under the gearbox that will be left open for some reason and can be prone to dirt entering the clutch area
If ue steering rack is suspicious get that checked out as well while its getting the box fixed
Mine was fubared and needs new seals as well steering arm ends
All in all now its about 2k alredy in cash for labour and parts and getting higher lolllllll
Good luck with yours
I just had a single piece made up for my AE71, supplied front yoke and rear flange, 180$ + unis if they need to be replaced. Just supplied the length from the diff flnage to the rear gearbox seal and he did the rest, ive had two made this way with no troubles. He said he wont make single piece tailshafts over about 1.6mtrs for the vibration factor
Statewide Driveshafts in clayton, look em up in the yellow book, quick turn around too![]()
That’s pretty good price mate
I just went single piece cause I though its lesee hassels with the centre bearing and shit plus the old one would be worn out ??????
Yeah but mine cost me 370 and took a day to get
i had m&s driveshafts in sunshine do my driveshaft. they supplied a new input yoke to my w57 and new unis front and back (one piece shaft). it cost $350
there is also a place in geelong called kinetik(sp) engineering. they are far cheaper as my mate is getting a new shaft made for his effie and thats $220....one piece 3" shaft
Definatly going here:Balancing Services Australia, Chifley Drive, Preston. Spoke to some mates and heard notyhing but good things. I'll talk to them about a one piece drive shaft but i still think going for a 2 piece will happen.
purple5ive you sound like you've had trouble. This is like going to be the easiest conversion ever. Its like bolting on the factory gearbox, it IS bolting on the factory box etc. Should have no hassles. And the electric side is a piece of poo, just join the neutral switch together. Its that easy, the harder part comes into when doing the cruise control but that shouldnt be sooo difficult.
On a lighter side i bought a W58, brake and clutch pedal's, g-box x-member, master cylinder for $600 today. It came with a clutch but it looks fucked so i'll just get a new one. It also came with a slave cylinder but some idiot decided to belt it off with a hammer so the cast mounts are fubar.
Catch ya later
Yeah man I got the wrong clutch when I bought the gearbox well it actually came with the gearbox so I figured it would be the right one but the flywheel for the n/a ma70 is bigger than the ig-gte engine so I had a clutch that was bigger than the flywheel , hahahahahahah so had to get a new one a nice hot pink daikin h/d item
Fyi there som dude selling h/d clutch kits fr the gz20 soarer in Melbourne on ebay for 200 or so look em up
I haven’t had any major problems though just the clutch one but I wouldn’t call that a problem , more like my fault for getting the wrong clutch , otherwise everything in the conversion is going well mechanic said everything bolted into place no probs , he said the only thing i fucked up was with the clutch , and I didn’t get bellhousing bolts ,lolllllllllllllll
Btw my tailshaft is a 2.5 inch thick walled one with competition uni’s has little nippes to grease them wooooooooooooootttttttttttttt
lol its good to hear its going well for ya purple5ive. Yeah i have been looking at those clutchs on ebay, seems good to me plus the dude is like 20 mins from where i live so i'll probably just go check his shit out.
Still need flywheel, and shifter surround plus every little bolt that makes it go together
If you need a tailshaft resized here in Adelaide have a chat to Leitchfield - theyre a part of Cobra Cams - I considered it for a conversion for my 260c - Leitchfield himself is a cool guy and hes not overly expensive.....
