My car runs stock 205/55/16 tyres.
I am getting new 18 X 8 rims.
The tyre shop has quoted using:
Front 235/40/18
Rear 265/35/18
The rear tyres fall outside the rim width to tyre size guide.
Is this going to be ok or will it handle like a pig?
Should I be using smaller rear tyre?
Front 235/40/18 , Sure, these will fit no problems, im running these sizes...
Rear 265/35/18 , Doubt they will fit on 8 inch wide rims... I have these sizes on 18x9 rims and would can only go 275's max on a 9 inch wide rim. SO i would say get some 9 inch wide back rims and go the 265's.

265/35/18 do fit on a 18 x 8 rims, I had a quick search and 350Z and LS1 guys seem to use these. I will try asking them I think.
I would go 9 inch in the rear if I could buy them in that size.
I have run 255 on a 8 inch rim and they had no sidewall bulge at all in a 35 profile. 265 isn't optimum but will be fine.

what brand of tyre?Originally Posted by broken22

both rims are 19x8.5 so obviously diffent brands must use different ways to measure there tires (falkens allways seem to be narrow)
IMHO i would just run the 235/40x18s all round provided the wheel offsets are the same and that way you can rotate wheels without any probs.

I run those exact sizes for rims / tyres in a toyo T1R.
The rears seem to have a bit of angle about the sidewall, but it doesn't seem to be too much of a problem. That said, there are other points in my suspension setup that would show before the sidewalls.
I have no trouble with uneven tread wear etc.
Can someone link me to the rim width to maximum tyre size guide?
I have a copy of the rim width to minimum tyre size guide, but it doesn't mention the widest tyre to fit on x rim.

I use this one, probably brand/type specific but will still give you a good guide. Gives recommended rim width once you select a specific tyre.

Turns out 265/35/18 won't fit that easily on my car.
I ended up with:
Front: 225/40/18 (any wider they hit the strut)
Rear: 245/40/18 (265s would require flaring)
i hope you didnt go the nanas again. cheep nasty things spend the coin and get somthing good. (good year, dunlop, b/stone)
Rub some dirt on it
