I was at the breakers yard today and found is200 with 6speed box, its mated to a1gfe motor and i am assuming it would bolt on to my 1ggte.(i think). It seemed a good price at £200 and apart from the advantage of 6speed i was wondering how it would effect the performance of the car on the 1/4 mile compared to the w58 as im not sure of the ratios
Thanks Davie
It is the J160 box fitted to both the 3SGE and 1GFE in the Altezza and people have used them on 1G-GTEs.
Strength has always been questioned although there are a number of turbo 1G-FE and 3S-GE altezzas running around without transmission complaints.
Ratios from: http://trdparts.jp/english/list_race-mis_sxe.html

TRD(33030-SE100) 3.106 2.175 1.585 1.223 1.000 0.869
Step Ratio 0.700 0.729 0.772 0.818 0.869
Original(J160) 3.874 2.175 1.484 1.223 1.000 0.869
Step Ratio 0.561 0.682 0.824 0.818 0.869
I can't comment on the effect the ratios would have on your quarter mile.

The J160 is the same box found in MX5s and 200sx isn't it? I'd be checking to see how much power the SR20 boys are putting through them as a good example on how much they can take.
AE102 - Charlene, 71.7kw atw, now carves corners. Seated up, FXGT bar lights of fog-ness.
KE55 - Billie the beast, sadly missed
AE82 - Rosie. 70.8kw atw. Has been converted into garage space and money at last
ST162 - Charlie, non-ghey ST162 machine. 3SGE>>4AGE. Now taking up garage space
JZZ30 - Lexi, 1JZGTE>>3SGE. 200rwkw, hunting Skylines and n00bs in SS Commodores
The gear box should last, I am using a hilux clutch, no problem so far, it's the universal joint that gave way twice ... maybe it is not 100% straight? I converted my 1G to a single RB25 turbo, the rest is stock. The original flywheel from the 1GFE has a damper, it will slip behind the GTE.
I had to shift quite fast when my diff was a 4.5, now it's a 3.9. It is actually a set of 6 gears doing 5 gears work, not 5 gears + 1 additional gear for fuel consumption.
I am using 225/55/16 at the back, 6th gear, 4k rpm is 127 km/h. Somehow I would prefer the 5 speed if there is enough power upfront.
Thanks guys for the info , getting the box on thursday

Hey, i know this is a bit of a moot point now that you may have got the gearbox but i wanted to add some data i have.
As part of uni, we had to design a gearbox with an objective to get to a certain speed in the fastest time. I did most of the work on the initial analysis as i was pretty good at excel and not so good in the other areas of the project - but where this helps is that i can input any ratio and configure it to provide a 1/4 mile time.
Through this and my analysis of the project, it will all depend on the shift times you can achieve as the more gradual you can make the changes (more gear ratios) the better acceleration you can get but this will be offset by having to shift and reducing the time you can accelerate, and soon you get to a point where more gears isnt going to be better.
The spreadsheet does approximate a launch so isnt exact but comparisons to performance times of a Mk IV Supra has shown it to be close, if a bit conservative.
In order to help you, i need a few things from you. The most critical are the diff ratio and wheel size as this affects the speed and it puts both boxes changing gear very close to the 400m mark. If you dont know then give me all the info you can and i will just make it all constant so only the different gearboxes affect the time.
The list of stuff required:
- rolling diameter of the tyre (or rim and complete tyre size)
- diff ratio
- weight
- CG height
- weight distribution (front/rear)
- how much time you think you could shift gears in
- if youll run slicks or street tyres (or both)
A dyno curve would help greatly too (this whole spreadsheet is based off a dyno curve).
One comment is that i have found the ratios of the J160 and they arent ideal - the TRD ratios are much much better. And if youre trying to maximise 0-100kmh then go for the W58 as itll make that in second rather than 3rd for the J160. for the quarter, its quite close so far with the numbers i have put in (the W58 slightly ahead but not by the amount required for the extra shift in the J160 to get it there).

I put a J160 in my celica some 4 years ago behind a 1ggte with more than 200rwkw. I use the car for cruising and for hillclimbs and sprints and the J160 is a pleasure to drive. There are lots of evidence that it is not anywhere as strong as a w58, the car was only on the road for a few months before I when overseas for 3 years or so and the box is alraedy a little noisy at idle with the clutch out. In fact sx200 owners seem to replace it with the 5 speed out of a S13. Despite that I like the 6 speed and will even take the opportunity to buy a spare as I think it is not a matter of if I will replace it but when. (I understand that you can get a stronger gearset, the price that I was quoted was about US$3,500. You can get a h/d box from the US for US$7,500.)
My view would be that, gearing aside, that you would be better off with the W58 for 'drag' work.
If you decide to go ahead I have a post somewhere that sets out what is involved in fitting the box - just search ddeane. By the way make sure that you get the g/box mount, fork, shifter, etcCraig
I also have a 6speed behind my 1g.

Thanks for the info guys, I have decided to stick with the w58( if it aint broke dont fix it) I am going to use the cash on a set of custom metal wheel arch extensions as the fibreglass ones suck and money has to be spent wisely as im way over budget already but i might go for it next year
what is the length of the 1G J160 from bellhousing face to centre of shifter position?

the gearbox is actually Aisin Industries AZ6. It was available in the Miata, the RX8, the Altezza(S and G powered), and the S15. This is the gearbox I'm having adapted to fit the 4AG/T50 bellhousing.
From EXTENSIVE research the transmissions capabilities from a stock persepective is most noted by the Silvia GTR owners. It appears that the AZ6 limits are at about 200#-ft of torque in a 2800+# car. Lower the torque, and you can run a heavier car, lower the mass and you can run more torque.......
There are aftermarket gear sets for these transmissions... but the are EXTREMELY costly... HKS makes the gear sets(not a finished transmission, just a set of gears)... and from memory they cost over $6,000
