hey all as the title states the engine wont fire. first off i replaced the head gasket, water pump and timing belt on the old aw11 the other day and now she wont start. it tries but back fires when it tries to kick over. i triple checked everything and the only thing i can narrow it down to is that it has a after market dizzy cap on it and i dont think the order that is written on the outside of that is the same as the oem one. can any one tell me the normal order that is written on top of the oem dizzy cap so i can double check everything?
try to set the cam at 1 or zero degrees. then open the valve cover and remove the distributer cap. the rotor should be pointing at position 1 therefore high tension wire 1 should be there. then it's 1,3,4 then 2 in a counter clockwise manner for a 20V engine.
which 4age do you have?
Yeah i have a bigport 4age which has the dizzy almost the same as the 20valve i think
my set up on the top of the dizzy is
2 1
4 3
I had a look on the net and the only one i could find is a 20valve dizzy and its set up was
4 2
3 1
By any chance the would the 20 valves set up be the same?
this help mate

looking at it from the front on a 20V silvertop
counterclockwise firing order 1-3-4-2
looks like it clockwise for your engine though.
3 - 4
1 - 2
damn that photo is the same order as what mine has got. that doesn't solve anything. after changing the water pump and head gasket i put the engine back together the exact same way i pulled it apart but the bastard wont start still. i double checked all the electrical side of the wiring and still cant work out y it wont fire. anyone got any ideas?
Can you put the dizzy in 180 out???
could be a timing issue. or valve leaks? hmm
at top dead centre check the cam's
inlet dowl in cam is set at around 12 oclock
exhaust dowl in cam is set at around 6 oclock
check earth near fuel rail
yep the timing is set properly did that and double checked it the earth is fine to.
what do you mean 3bar superstar?
mate can u confirm u are actually getting spark down all 4 leads?
(you mentioned before about an aftermarket cap thats all)

O, with recent reassembly and those symptoms, I hardly doubt that the timing is off - ignition and/or cam, but it could also possibly be a plug or wire. Quadruple?Originally Posted by KARNAGE
IGNORE whatever is on the cap, where the rotor points is what's accurate & always works.
When it points to #1(the order is 1342 which ever way the rotor turns) AND at TDC to begin its power stroke, it will start. Move the distributor to get the fastest & smoothest idle and then move it a little more in the direction of its rotation to Retard it a little, bringing the idle down 50 to 100 RPM. Moving it in the direction the rotor turns is retarding, moving against will advance the ignition timing.
TDC power stroke will pop your finger or stuff out of the plug when turning it over with a wrench, a drive wheel off the ground, pushing the car, pulling on belts or a screwdriver in the alt. fan blades.
ok thanks for the tips i will get to work on it this week and get back to everyone with the results
