Hi all,
A friend of mine has an old apolla/camry with a 3SFE 2l engine in it.
He came round to my place to help him with a service and I found oil (look used) in the pots.
Any ideas how it got in there and how to stop it?
Cheers

The cam covers have leaked, to get it out, try using a large syringe, and some absorbent rags.Originally Posted by Grfoos
You will probly notice about 6 phillipshead screws holding each cam cover down, tighten these up, should help... you may also need to replace the camcover gaskets...
Could also be from the last service and some spilled oil. Depends on which pots the oil is in really. If it's the 2 closest to the filling cap, I'm pretty certain what the cause is![]()
Are the spark plug tubes inside the rocker cover or does it run seperate rocker covers like a 4a? If it has the tubes it is probably the tubes them self have leaked. You need to remove the tubes and reseal the bottom of them. They screw in by the way.
they run one around the outside of the rocker cover, then a smaller one that just goes around the spark plug pots 2 and 3. The gasket itself is a like a big shapped rubber "o" ring that sits in a groove on the underside of the rocker cover.
Ide say its most likely leaking gasket because this is a common 3s problem

they will be leaking where your spark plug tubes screw into your head (the thread part)
take off the rocker cover and you can use two of the nuts locked together to screw them out or you can use some multigrips to unscrew them
if you use the multigrips dont damage where the top seals(under the rocker cover nuts )sit this area will be clean
try to turn them on the part that is stained with oil
they will be tight but will unscrew if you turn them anticlockwise
remove all 4 of them clean them up with a wire wheel(bench grinder) and put some toyota black sealer or similar on the threads (lots) and then screw them back in
and refit rocker cover
do they run a seperate tube? or are the like the "ge" heads and have the spark plug holes as cast into the rocker cover with a gasket around it?

separate tube mate
I have resealed thousands of them now
The ones i have come across leak from the top seal of the spark plug tube, just tighten up the big nuts underneath the spark plugs leads.. dont go too tight though ..Or at worst just replace the seals inside the cam cover ...
