1jz auto reverse light wiring problems

Im trying to get my reverse lights hooked up for rego inspection but im having problems with the wiring to get 12volts to the lights. I have been told the wire out of the auto is on the plug for the gear indicator lights, but a can get 12v at that plug anywhere when in reverse. oh and its a jzx81 auto. can anyone help?
