    Default Late supra/soarer cross member?

    G'day,
I am trying to work out if the crossmember in my GZ20 soarer can actually have a JZ engine drop straight onto it without modification. The general response so far that it is not possible, but I think it may be.

Using my VIN number, the EPC returned the same part number for a MA70, JZA70 and GA70 crossmember. This leads me to believe I may be right. The car is also 'after kouki(minor change)'.

Here are some pics of the engine mounts etc. Can anyone confirm my suspision.

no. gz crossmembers are totally different.

1990+ MZ20 crossmembers with the round mounts can be used, but not GZ.

even though these mounts are round, and later model GZ20's had square ones.. theyre still different.

however after a second look at that last pic, it looks like it sits quite similarly to a JZ mount hey..

Please explain the VIN number thing then? Did you actually try putting a JZ on your crossmember when you did the conversion?

mine wouldnt have gone onto it coz i had the square mounts.

the second generation Z20's with the late model taillights had two different part codes for the crossmember sub-assy. 51210-14020 for vehicles between jan 1988 to jan 1989.. and 51210-14021 for vehicles between jan 1989 to end of production in april 1991.

well from what ive heard you bolt the JZ sub frame in place of the original GZ item.

I assume this is to get around customising mounts etc.

    yeah thats what i did.

all i can say rob is mate..dont even look at an engine package. go the halfcut from the beginning and bolt it all up. you'll save youself 1/2 the headaches i had if you browse through my JZZ20 thread..

Oh i plan on getting a half cut, aristo! I'm just trying to decrease my shopping list. For it to bolt straight up I would need a late A70 crossmember or custom mounts. I was just doing some research and it seemed using the epc that I might have already had the right part.
Ohwell we will soon enough see. Hurry up summer!

    oh you're going 2J! whoops! i assumed 1J

im pretty certain you're going to need a supra front cut though not an aristo though because the sump location is different. only the supra cut with its mid sump will fit the JZA70 crossmember.. im quite certain aristo is front sump..

im planning to do this down the track too rob...im wondering if it would be feasible to buy an aristo engine package and a JZA70 halfcut and sell off the valuable stuff like the 1JZ and aristo front sump...ya dig?

then you get the mounts, box, x members, etc etc you all need

By far the easiest but initally most epensive route would be a JZA70 half cut and Aristo half cut.
For the conversion of a aristo 2JZ-GTE:
THe sump needs to be replaced witha JZA70 or MKIV varient sump. I will also be wanting to run a manua transmission so a R154 with JZ series flywheel and crossmember is nessesacary. The crossmember from a JZA70 would also allow the engine to be dropped on without any thought.

For me, I am going to buy an aristo cut. They are increadibly cheap I saw one on ebay not soo long ago for $2700! Then buy an R154, JZ bellhousing and flywheel. Rebuild the transmission with new bearings, first gear thrust washer and a few other bits right away. Change seals, timing belt on the motor and see if it will all drop onto my crossmember., if not I will prob make up some brackets.

I guess If you can find someone to by the 1jz and sump etc then it might be more feasable to go with both halfcuts.

I hear that there is some desire for the front sump of the aristo. Who uses these?

ummm... youll need a spare set of alloy engine brackets too then... coz if you're moving the 1JZ and not including those with it you might have a very peeved off customer. so youll need a spare set to bolt to the 2JZ in order to seat it on JZA70 mounts.

R154 + JZ Bellhousing & Flywheel expect another 2K on top of your aristo halfcut at least.

For a little bit less you should be able to pick up a factory manual 5 speed JZA80 halfcut. ($4200ish)

    buy the aristo 2J and a JZA70 1J.

swap sump (and mounts it they cross over)

then sell the 1JZ with front sump as a chaser package, front sumps are the most sought after type, and you wont have any trouble selling it.

from there, you should have a 2J ready to go in, your cross member looks compatible to me.

it'll take you 6-7 months if you dont have any major issues.

people on here with issues have taken from 12-18 months.

oh, and Aristo cuts ae starting to get more expensive, as importers are starting to cut up cars because there arent enough wrecks/halfcuts around anymore.

so anything you do, id do it sooner rather than later.

    aristo cut ~$3500.

obviously you can find cheaper, and more expensive, but this is the regular price at www.wcimports.com.au

    6-7 months to do what?

    the conversion?

you smoking from the crack pipe again?

you really dont like 2JZ's do you...but then again when you had 7M's you hated 1JZ's

also ,the MA61 boys LOVE teh front sump... you will never have trouble selling one (and, to be honest, you should try a swap + cash adjustment of $50 or something)

6-7 months is the time for a me conversion, whereby I ignore it for months on end. only the laziest, most busy or crappest of people will take 7 months to do a conversion.
We even managed to get a fair chunk of Joorsh's supra conversion done in one night while drunk, including a break for pizza and more beer.

PS: never do a conversion where me, ed, and stitt are exposed to beer. Joorsh doesn't drink beer, so you can ask him.
