My ke70 daily driver will not start. It isn't the usual stuff either. I simply can't turn the key past the off position?
It started playing up yesterday and it took me about 1min of fiddling to get it to move. Tried moving the wheel left and right as it was in lock mode and pushing the key in as far as possible.
Got it to start this morning after about a minute as well but when I went out at lunch it would not start! I was in there for about 5 minutes trying.
Key looks fine and so does the barrel?
Any ideas on how I can get home this arvo?

I have had this problem in the corona recently too. I have two genuine toyota keys and alternatively each one for different periods of time have stopped working in the ignition barrel. Its not the steering lock because as soon as the other key is in it turns straight away.
I too would like to know if anyone has any ideas. Both my keys are in good condition too so no problems there.
If in doubt power out
sounds like loose wafers. Go to a locksmith and get the barrel re-wafered. To get home, take the barrel off (hammer and flat screwdriver will get the screws undone) and take the wiring off the back and turn with screwdriver.

yes, alot of things to do at once!
if not take the lock to a locksmith
if the lock is the same as a RA23/28/40 KE55 etc then you dont actually have to take the whole steering lock off to get the key lock part out
if you look closely at the front of the lock, on the side where the key goes in, then you will see a small pin.
get a small punch and push this pin in with the key in the off (or lock?) position.
you should then be able to slide the key lock out of the steering lock housing with a bit of wiggling.
saves having to get those headless bolts undone!!
then you can take it to a lock smith

try spraying some inox,wd40 in there. or some graffite powder might help free it up.
Thats what key cutter suggested to me when i had problems with my motorbike.

you do need to take the bolts off if you wanna drive it, otherwise your steering lock will come on.

As for the problem, my Cressida does that too. I find giving it a jiggle along the axis of the key, and also pulling it out and putting it back in firmly with pressure against the detents helps a lot.
As does turning the key over.

Mine was starting to play up like that when i got a mate of mine to re-wafer my entire lockset (i was running on 5 keys), fixed the problem, and works like a new set now.

your missing the point brett, the lock itself operates the steering lock, got nothing to do with the electrics. What good is starting the car if you cant turn the steering wheel??

That may be the case for the Celicas, however, i can definitively say that on an AE86/KE70 the steering lock is operated by the key barrel, and if you remove the barrel then it will simply engage.

To remove the barrel you need the key in a position other than off(unless your barell is farked). Its something the manufacturers did to try and prevent ppl stealing cars just by removing the barell.
