Ok, I know the 5M-E is a poo motor so we don't need to go there.
I suspect that the thermostat has been removed from my motor by the original owner, since it runs at a low temp all the time.
Now from reading a bloody lot of threads here & 40 years of driving, I've worked out that engine heat + high K's = BHG risk in any engine.(moreso the 5M-E)
Question:
Is it better to leave the thermostat out, engine runs cooler but uses more fuel.
Or fit a new thermostat, engine runs higher temp, less fuel. But increases the risk of HG problems.
At the moment the motor runs as smooth as silk, gear changes that you can't feel happen. And I'm happy with the performance in my daily driving.

you'll be wasting lots of fuel (not that the 5me is a fuel-efficient motor in the first place) and fouling plugs... maybe get a thermostat but drill in an extra bleed hole to improve flow when warming up.
5ME is not as prone as 7mge to the BHG syndrome
use a thermostat, it regulates your flow through the motor. I use a 72" thermostat in my 302, which beforehand i had no thermostat. It now runs cooler than it did before and warms up quicker.Originally Posted by hi-ace
5me is just as bad as the turd 7mge/gte IMO, put an 82" thermosat in it and it will be fine. i ran one of these in my crown with good success.
Another vote for a thermostat here

Same, but consider the possiblity that if it is missing, the previous owner may have taken it out to avoid overheating problems/spending money.Originally Posted by wilbo666
Put the correct one in if it is indeed missing, see what happens and then effect whatever other repairs may be required.
How many k's is 'high'?
Thanks guys.
It looks like I will put one in. But I might go down the path that "thechuckster" has suggested, put a second bleed hole in it just to slow down the warm up time a bit.
gianttomato.
I don't think it was taken out to avoid spending money on a problem. The original owners (old couple) looked after it pretty well.

If you take a look at it, you'll see it was looked after.

Ok, so today I decided to check out my thermostat to see if it was or was not there.
Well you could say it was there, but may as well not have been.
As you'll see from the photo below, this is what I removed when I opened up the housing.
So before fitting the new one I drilled a second bleed hole. 2 reasons for this.
1/ slows down the heat up process a little.
2/ in the event of a failure, you still have some water flow. Less likely to cause major over heating problems untill it gets replaced. As seen in this photo.
After a short drive up the street, the temp came up to where it should be.
