Hi there,
I have installed a headunit into my sv21 90 model camry. I have chopped the original plug off the head unit and rewired my new one in. The headunit works great. The problem is that there are no dash lights anymore. There are 2 wires on the plug which didn't appear to do anything with the headunit. I suspect that these wires are what has stopped my dash lights from working.
Coincidentally, my uncle has just installed the head unit into his 96 camry and has exactly the same problem. He has tried all possibilites of 12v and ground to the 2 wires and either nothing happens or the fuse blows.
How have other people got around this? It was interesting driving last night with no dash lights![]()
what happens if you put the two wires together?
i gather that they are used to illuminate the radio. perhaps having them not connected open circuits and then you get no dash lights. by joining them together you may re loop the circuit they will work??
can you check if they have power when the lights are turned on. ie test light. if one has power and the other doesnt, try connecting them and see what happens.
the worst will probably be another blown fuse.

else if you need to i can grab a pic of my wiring for you, though i cant say it'd be any different to yours, as none of those wires relate to dash lights.
You used the green wire as your earth didn't you...........
Earth on an SV-21 is the white/black wire.
On your uncles car it will be the brown wire.
Easy trap to fall into is to use the illuminatio wire as a earth.
I always check my earth wires with the headlights turned ON.
Either that or just make my own earth.
dont bother about the earth wire , it will earth through the radio case, hence that is why the fuse for illum blows when it is connected to the earth wire from the radio
Ever seen the internals of alot of aftermarket stereo's and taken note of where earth points are taken from ( preamp, line out grounds, etc)? I assume not.Originally Posted by bansheebuzz

sorry taken so long to reply.
Still have no dash lights and now I have no head lights either! That just happened randomly about 2 days after the dash lights went.
I have the HU, the white and black wire and the green wire all grounded at the same spot.
There was 10 wires on the old Hu plug.
constant 12v
accessories
ground (white and black)
Speaker wires X 4
A black with red
black with yellow
black
What do these last 3 wires do? I can't even find the black one? I think that may be the problem.
The headlight relay is clicking but the headlights still don't turb on????
does it have an electric antenae? black and red usually go to the power antenae, well in most toyotas.
mate can you give us a run down of what colours you have there and what you have used?
the general convention i have found on all the toyota's i have ever done are
LY 12V
WB/Br ground
PL & BR power antenea
W & R rear right
B & Y rear left
Light G & L front right
V & P front left
accessory seems to change though depending upon vehicle
what do you mean you can't find the black, as in the wiring diagram says its there, but its actually not?I can't even find the black one? I think that may be the problem.
edit: I know this is not gospel but i have found on all the toyotas i have wired stereo's into they have all been like this

Chris,
I thought the green wire in the stereo was the illumination wire. I appears as an earth withe the lights off, but becomes 12V when they are switched on. It is used by some headunits for dimming the display at night. If the green wire is for illumination DO NOT EARTH IT.
The green wire is currently earthed and no dash lights or headlights.
There was also nothing when the green wire was not connected to anything.
So the only option left is to wire it to something. ANyone know what that something might be?
Doesn't have electronic aerial either.
It only has 2 speakers stock so 4 wires for speakers. (don't know what colours they are now)
Yellow = constant
red = accessories 12v
black/white = ground.
I have left:
black w red
black w yellow
black
Well I had the black. It was on the plug that went into the stereo and I chopped the old plug off and now somehow the black wire has dissappeared? Was hard to look last night though as we had power out and just a torch![]()

Broken22 is dead correct. Do not connect the green to anything. Check your fuses as well as the earth at the battery and fuse/relay box in the engine bay. Loose earths at these points can take out your headlights.
Ther rear speaker wires will be there just not connected to anything at the back of the car.
