I think this is a great idea.

If you visit OCAU, they have a similar thread in 'the pub' which seems quite popular.

Somewhere safe, and without fear of ridicule for expressing whatever is bringing you down...

... this is a public forum and we always see the all too common short-sightedness and lack of consideration that is often displayed in peoples posts. So, not sure how it will survive without some ridicule from someone.

I suspect that people will modify their own behaviour in that kind of thread and be more sensible and constructive in what they add to it... also, maybe the mods' tollerance for allowing such ridicule should be lowered accordingly.

I'm sure it could be made to work. It'd be sad if you canned the idea before looking into it.

No offense intended, but don't you think there are enough Emo haunts out there if you want to have a cry?

The only value i see this forum contributing to this very serious issue is a thread that would have a single post listing the number for Lifeline. It is presumptuous, not to mention dangerous, to assume that a random collection of misguided advice is going to help anyone.

Dud advice, however well intended, provided elsewhere on this forum will not (generally) lead to someone's death.

Until you've been through it, you are incapable of fully appreciating how debilitating it can actually be, and it's actually not just "emo" kids crying over frivolous garbage!

Mental health is a serious, and under appreciated issue prevalent in today's society!

I'm not, and never would suggest that any help/suggestions offered are to replace a professionals advise, yet to supplement the knowledge that your GP/Dr have already offered and help you further understand the issues at hand.
Also it has the ability to enable different perspectives and people to offer first hand experiences of what worked for them, and enables those seeking advise to research different approaches before or for their next appointment, to bring up and discuss.

You have completely misunderstood my post. My exact point was this is a serious issue and what you have proposed, to my mind, trivialises it. I also believe it would turn into a "cry over frivolous garbage' within 6 posts. The small % of serious issues that might arise would best be dealt with elsewhere....you clearly have proposed a senario to replace professional help

As for my own mental health, that is my business and you have no idea what i am capable of.....a perfect example of where your well intentioned but misguided assumptions could do more harm than good.

I agree. These are two main reasons why i'm not 100% in favour of this (albeit well-intended) idea.

The few times I've been involved with serious mental health issues, I really don't think chatting publicy about it over an internet forum would have significantly changed the outcomes. But hey, I could be wrong.

it sounds what you want is a "cry for help" type thread? for people that have no friends or family they can talk to?
i still think MSN/yahoo/messenger type things are better for communication in situations like this, rather than a public statement in a forum..

plus, those that really need the help are usually the ones that never seek it out

I can see serious problems with this idea.. No matter how well intended.. no matter what level of moderation there is.. There are some serious wankers around that will exploit peoples issues...

Moderators dont spot things in an instant... all it takes is one person to give misguided advice for massive potential to do harm..

Not to mention the simple issue of: THIS IS THE INTERNET... a public forum.. there is no controlling what people will do with the information gained from such a thread...
