Hi all, I have decided to dump the original 1.8l vvc engine in my MGF as it commonly has HGFso i am just curious if anyone has done or knows of anyone who has fitted a 4A-GE or 4A-GZE engine into a 1997 MGF if so is it a hard job?? and lastly how much would it set me back to purchase either the 4A-GE or 4A-GZE engine wih wiring loom, ecu etc.
MGF is too new to fit the 4AGZE methinks... unless you can show that the engine will still meet emissions.
have you tried fixing HGF properly? skim deck and head, add ARP studs and an MLS gasket?
what about something like 1ZZ or 2ZZ, or even AZ series...

Hmmm thats actually a very good idea, i neva even thought to look at the elise engine and it shouldnt be too hard to fit as the elise was also running the k-series rover engine too so should fit nicely, not only that but the 2zz-ge engine has considerabley more power too. any idea of a price for the 1zz or 2zz engines?
2zz expensive....a few grand because there isnt exactly heaps of engines kicking around yet, in the not too distant future some half cuts should be popping up i would think.
1zz are easier to get hold of because people with MRS do engine swaps with 2zz and therefore have the 1zz doing nothing.

i see what you mean i looked for the 2zz but didnt have much luck finding one, then had a look for the 1zz and straight up found 1, only thing is its outta a toyota corolla and was just wondering if there is much difference between the corolla and the mr2 engine being that the mr2 is a mid mount? they asking $990 for the 1zz engine only no box with 61k on the odo is that a fair price u rekon?
1zz front cuts go for about $2,200 here in Brisbane. Get a hold of JP as hes the man who is working a 1zz-fTe. That would SPANK your MGF into life.

If you shop around the 1zz's can be had for as little as $700 for a long motor with accessories. The corolla and MR-S motors use slightly different intake and exhaust manifolds, you're best off trying to find an enigne with an uncut loom as this will make the wiring conversion a lot easier. It's a bit of a pain to get around the factory ecu immobiliser, there's other options out there for engine management though if you want more power. I've personally run a MR-S powerfc on a corolla 1zz engine and have recently changed over to a Vi-PEC V44 for more control and better features. In N/A form you can squeeze about 90-100kw ATW from the 1zzfe, 140-150kw is fairly easy to achieve in a modest turbo setup.
If you're shopping around for a 1zz frontcut, make sure you tell the place you dont want any of the lights or panels. To most of the wreckers the frontend parts are worth more than the drivetrain as there's not much demand for replacement engines/boxes.
A low-blow turbo setup works very well on the 1zz, the one I built was running 8psi with an MY08 WRX TD04L but was having some clutch slip issues at 10-12psi. I've just installed a new clutch on the weekend and will be heading to the dyno shortly to run it up around 12-14psi with gear-based boost control on the Vipec, 8psi in 1st and then more once it gets traction. It's done 10,000km on the turbo setup so far without any issues.
