1JZ Turbo into Mazda Luce/929

Hi guys, I am a long time reader, first time poster.

I currently own a HC Mazda 929/Luce 1990 model and I am embarking upon a conversion involving a 1JZ Toyota motor.

Now, this will be my first experience with Toyotas of any kind, having been into Nissans and Mazdas all my life, but I am keen to learn as much as possible about Toyota stuff.

Any information is greatly appreciated. Right now I am trying to figure out what gearbox to use, since i have already done a manual conversion i need a manual box. I am thinking either R154 or a W58.

My advice is use the R154, it will take alot more abuse before it goes bang!

Also, if you intend on installing a boost controller, do it now as its a pain in the ass to get to the rear turbo once the motor is in the car, though its not impossible!

I'd prolly also polish whatever you intend on polishing now

The 1JZ is a great motor man, and should be f*cken sweet in this once done!

As smokey said the R154 box is the box that come out of the factory with the 1JZGTE motor attached to it, the only thing is they are pretty pricey boxes & the gear changes are a bit clunky compared to a lot of other boxes out there ..

How are you going for length under the bonnet, when they only came with a V6 standard ..

Not a bad choice of cars though, we looked at one years ago as a family car ..

I think it is a resounding yes to the R154, trouble is going to be finding one at the right price i think.

As for length i think the trick is going to be as far back as possible - might even have to massage the firewall. I have been looking for a reason to hit this thing with a hammer haha

Seriously though, how long are these toyota boxes?

Awesomeness, pimp 4 door cruiser with 1J love. Definitely go with the R154 straight out as i can almost guarantee down the track you will end up switching over to one anyway when you break some W58's.

Also, i have a nice surprise for you in the form of 1J 929 info (not sure if you've seen this before) this one is running an auto box though - check it out.

R154's seem to have come down in price significantly... They seems to pop up from anywere between 1k and 1500k ...

Infact, crownman on these forums might even have a couple that he's willing to sell, send him a PM and im sure he'll be happy to help get it to ya!

Thanks endless, I have actually seen that car before, it was part of my inspiration, theres also another 929 guy doing a 2J conversion.

R154 it is, does anyone know the length of them? the hardest part of this whole conversion is going to be the positioning of the shifter i think.

well i got the motor yesterday, thanks to Matt for letting me borrow his crane, and to my gf's dad for the trailer.

Matt, do you have any idea exactly what parts are missing so i can make a list of what to get?

Avoid firewall love if you can... there looks like a decent bit of room in there - you may need to fit thermos, but it should all squeeze in (tape measure is your best friend).

What do the radelaide engineers think of your planned mods? A little worm told me your road regs regarding mods suck

fuck i love these 929's. i came so close to buying one, was haggling over price and the dude was being a cock so it never happened.
does it have a button on the dash marked"swing" for the air vents?
thats so cool how they swing back and forth.
