Default w55 into MX73, opinions please.

I am thinking of putting a w55 into my MX73 with a 4.3 diff, should I even be considering this option or should just be chasing a w58.

If w58 is the only way to go should I get a 4.3 diff or will standard 4.1 do.

If going to 4.3 diff I will be needing different speedo gears/sprockets in the gearbox yeah? if so do they have to be custom?

This is with a 1UZ is it? I'd say both 4.1 and 4.3 are too low, I'd be chasing a 3.7.

If you change the diff ratio then yes you'll need to change the speedo gears. Use this site to determine which ones you need:

4.3 and W55 will be ridiculous, unless you have a sub 2.0L motor.

3.7 and W55 will be a nice combo.

Oh yeah I was thinking backwards DOH, standard is 4.1 so I should have been thinking lower, closer to 1 to 1, so 3.7 should be good ah cool.

    Nah not a 1UZ in my MX73 I wish, its just a 5MGE modded to 3Ltr with 6M parts.

    Thanks for replys

W55 has a low 1st gear... i would use a W57 or W58 as both have the same 1st gear ratio... but the W58 has a taller 5th...
    MA61 supra uses a 3.9:1 diff ratio With W58.. But the RA65 has 3.5:1 diff with W55... 5th gear on the W55 & W57 are the same...
Me i would use W57 from a RA60 (cheep & easy to get) & 3.9:1 diff ratio.. as you would not have to change speedo thing..
If car has IRS then use a manual MA61's diff with LSD..

So w55/57 & 3.5 diff and W58 & 3.9 diff to keep correct speedo gear thingy ratios ?

Shifter position of RA60 & MA61 are they correct for MX73?

Wiki shows small difference between w55 & w57 5th gear.

    ????? No
    W55 from RA65 & 3.5:1 = correct speedo gear thingy ratios..
    But some are W58..
    W55 from SA63 & 3.9:1 = correct speedo gear thingy ratios.. ( i think the '63 was W55 & 3.9.. )
    W57/8 from RA60 or MA61 & 3.9:1 = correct speedo gear thingy ratios..

Shifter position of RA60 & MA61 are they correct for MX73? Well if not ..... cut a hole... or use SA63 W55..???

Can you change speedo gears from different boxes, anyone know how or done that, is it much of a task?

Could just get custom speedo gears if its not too costly, anyone got idea of cost and where to get parts?

Would really like to get a W58 & 3.5:1 diff so have nice low revs to cruise in top gear.

you can also use the sa63 tail shaft front half, so as not to have a custom tail shaft made.

Plastic speedo (driven) gear is easy to change, comes in a few flavours, 31, 32, 33 teeth.
Metal speedo (driving) gear is much harder to change (rear part of gbox requires removal), comes in 2 flavours, 10 and 11 teeth.

But if you are changing the shifter position (you'll need MA70 or GA70 to be in centre of hole), then you'll have the rear of the gbox off anyway, and you can put the new driving gear on there.

W58 and 3.58 with a 5/6MGE will be a bit of a slug off the line.
Will perfectly suit a 7MGTE or 1/2JZGTE if you ever plan to go that route though.

    Thanks for the info!

I will have to put a bit of thort into what motor to get next, 7mge or even better 2JZ before I get the diff and speedo gears.

For the moment maybe get a 3.7 diff to go with the w58 and 5MGE modded to 6MGE.

You'd have a stupidly short first and 2nd gear.

Stupidly short? I would've just said redundant, first in particular will be useless for basically anything.

With stock rwd sizes tyres (630mm diameter) you'll have a top speed of 45 in first, and 75 in second... (assuming 6500rpm)

5th will top out at 185

If you follow the link I provided earlier you can easily calculate all of this so you can make an informed decision. It even does pretty graphs.
