    Default putting a GT oil/amp guage into a LT (2T) TA22

    hey everyone,
i'm probably going to buy a GT oil/amp guage for my TA22 in the next couple of days,
i know that i will have to swap the sender unit over to one that matches the guage, from a 2TG or another early Toyota that had oil pressure guages stock. Does anyone know of any early engines that i can grap one off? preferably an engine which is more common than a 2TG....

also is the thingo on the LEFT (circled) the oil light sender unit? the thing that i replace with the oil pressure sender unit that i'll get? or the thing on the right?

also how do i do it? swapping the wires seems the easiest option because its hooked up to the loom.

i've searched the old forums but couldnt find what i wanted.
please help me, i want one of these sweet guages, but not sure if i'll buy it without being able to put it into my car...

That be your oil pressure sender. I can't confirm whether or not you'd have to swap senders, but it's pretty likely that you would.

And the thing on the right is your earth strap. Keep it!!

    Dude,
To fit a GT oil/ammeter gauge into you LT you need to get the oil pressure sender unit as well as change the wiring a bit.

Easiest thing for the sender is to get one from a T18 as it has the same sender as the 2TG. This sender replaces your current unit which screws into the block near the oil filter. It should have one wire going to it.

Obviously you swap the oil light unit with the combination gauge, it will bolt straight on. BUT, to do it you need to take the instrument panel out of the car. You also need to switch 2 wires over on the 4 pin plug behind the gauge. Get it out and then I"ll explain what to do.
Finally for the ammeter you need to run a wire from the +post on the alternator to your gauge and then from teh gauge to the battery. This wire needs to be a decent size as its taking up to 50 amps. Also smart to use the fusible link just before the battery.

    Hope this helps,
    Simon

    thanks Simon!!
i reckon i'll pick up the guage and a sender unit from a T18, then maybe try some things myself or get an electrician friend to help me (do it for me)
i'll keep you posted after i've bought the stuff

as for common early toyotas with oil pressure senders.

I know that at least some ra40 celicas (both the ones i have owned) have had oil pressure gauges standard, and therefore have oil pressure senders on the engines (18r), i'm guessing the sender unit will be the same across many early toyotas??

Also something to note: My factory oil pressure sender broke, so i got a cheap arse aftermarket gauge and sender. I dont know if it was luck or not, but i just used the sender from the aftermarket gauge and it works fine with the standard gauge, gauge reads correct pressure. must have the correct resistance range.

    Cheers

Sorry to rehash this but I'm try to put this gt facier into my 22 at the moment. Did you ever sort this out Ace? I think I've sorted the ammeter now...The existing plug that goes to the oil/charge light is a three pin plug. The new guage has four prongs on the back, but the plug still fits. I ran another connector with a length of wire into the stock plug so now I have all four connections. (Simon tried to explain this to me however I think his loom colours were different to what I have) I have yellow, yellow with white, yellow with black and my extra pin (Red). I believe some of the wires need to be switched. If anyone has done this before to an lt and can offer some info that'd be great. Thanks in advance guys!

    shelldrake and others,

If this is any help to you:

The dash harness is from a 75 GT.

    Wiring is as follows:

Thick White +ve from the battery
Thick Black -ve to the fusebox etc.

    The 4 pin plug:

Top left: Yellow - Guage power feed
Top right: White/Black - Guage earth
Bottom left: Red/Black - Guage globe power feed
Bottom right: Yellow/Black - Oil pressure sender feed

Yellow, White/Black and Red/Black wires join up to the same coloured wires in the dash harness which also provide the same feeds to the other guages. The Yellow/black wire is unique to the oil pressure sender.

    Hope this helps.
