Default Coil swap for 4-pin, where to get RPM Signal 1JZ/2JZ ecu?

I have have replaced the standard 1jz and 2jz coils on a few cars converting to the newer 4 pin coil packs, aygo and yaris etc. I have come across a couple of cars that take the RPM signal from the igniter and so far the only way i have managed to get around it is to fool the igniter into thinking the coils have fired so it will produce the correct rpm signal back to the dash. Doing this is messy and means i have to leave the igniter wired in.

Is there any outputs from the standard ECU that will also out put an RPM signal? or any other location which would output the rpm signal?

    Cheers

The issue is that the RPM signal comes from the ignitor to the ECU and this seems to be the common theme with upgrading coils on the standard ECU. There are some people that claim to have done it but aren't very forthcoming with exactly how they made it work.

I did see this comment a while back although I have not been able to test if it works so would be keen to know if it does.

    • give them power from the existing coils power supply and earth them (head)
    • extend the 6 trigger wires from the ECU to the igniter (I assume this means from the igniter to the coil packs since the igniter already has these inputs from the ECU)
    • join all 6 IGF wires from the coil packs and feed it to the IGF pin on the ECU and to a tach adaptor
    • connect the tach adaptor to the tach wire for the dash

There is a tacho output on the standard 1JZ/2JZ ECU. It's a square wave signal though so quite different to what you get off the igniter.

If there is a square wave tacho signal available from the ECU then it is a simple task to make a small tacho adpater to provide the voltage spike an old school (coil negative) tacho requires. I believe there are threads on this site that tell you how to do this with a transistor, small relay coil and a couple of resistors.
