    Default 22R 'performance' choices

    Hi all,
I'm new to the upgrade world, but I like old utes and have spent about $10k doing up a 22r carby motor on a 1995 hilux rn90r. It initially generated 92hp at rear wheel and after rebuild it 'achieved' 115hp at 4k rpm on dyno. Mods were single d/draft 38 weber; worked inlet manifold,
Rebuilt balanced motor, high comp pistons and heavy duty clutch. Performance cam, extractors and lsd, koni's and 16" rims.
It drinks about 10.5 litres/100k, and is quite comfortable driving round town. But it has no real power.
I realise I probably should've dropped a lexus v8 in it...but thought the above work would have enough go to satisfy. I need about another extra 40hp (available at 3-4k revs).
Would side draft webbers do the trick?
Would the LC engineering turbo carby setup generate enough reliable power...without drinking buckets of fuel?
Would appreciate any suggestions from people who've worked on these tough old engines.

The 22r is quite a reliable thing but a performance base it is not. I remember seeing a thread years ago where a guy was trying to decide on his cam choice in 22re, and he ran a detailed engine simulator with 22r engine specs, and tried every cam on the market, and nothing made over a theoretical 120hp at the crank. I would simply suggest a hilux 3rzfe, simple, common and effective. You will find the 40hp if you boost the 22re, but custom boosted cars arent always great to daily drive. There was a factory 22rte that had better performance specs.

These cams seem to be the most effective if you are looking for improved torque numbers in the RPM range where most of us drive. If you are looking at high RPM cams to produce more HP in a modified engine, usually sacrificing lower end torque, these would probably not be your cam of choice. That's just my humble opinion.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback.....maybe it needs some Prius or Tesla electric kit ....carefully grafted on :-) . But I have spent more than $10k on the motor so I'm locked in, will consider cam options. Cheers

If your compression ratio isnt too high, I would strongly suggest turbocharging.

What would twin side draft 40mm webbers do for it. LCengineering has a kit for $us 1400? Would normal 'relaxed' city driving use much more fuel than a standatd single 36mm weber d.draft on a Crane cam, 10.5:1 compression.
Are side-draft systems pretty stable snd reliable or do they need tuning/adjusting every month?

The inlet manifold is a restriction, that's for sure. However so is the head. Have you done OS valves ? Drive ability on carbs will be all about finding a tuner who still knows how to adjust them properly. Id suggest to still use a programmable ignition, there's probably some gains there. From memory the 22re in the celica auto did some wierd retardation at first touch, in the name of saving the planet. If you disconnect the second vac hose to the dissy and plug it, it gets better response immediately by deleting the retard function. I tested it with a timing light, so considering these rudimentary emissions based concerns and tuning devices from the 1980s, I could see some improvement on carbs and a programmable ignition computer.

What cam do you have in it now? and whats the rest of your exhaust system? was it tuned on the new carby and timing adjusted?

I have/had a 22re in a rt142, later style with efi controlled timing. Just getting a set of extractors and 2.25 inch "sports" system seemed to make a huge difference, especially with a few extra degrees of timing, then went to a engine builder 270 cam and didn't seem to to lose much if any at all down low but really picked up in the mid-top end, no idea what it made sorry but really woke it up compared to stock, had to play with the flapper in the air flow meter to give it a little extra fuel as well.

I'm sorry but I can't tell you the specific cam, its just described as ' not too lumpy and plenty of power at low rev suburban driving', it has had work on the inlet manifold, hi comp pistons and balancing. It has extractors and performance exhaust. has been dyno'd on the 38 single ddraft 99 hp at 4600 rpm, dtorque 113 ftlb at 3,423 rpm at back wheels.
It has a bit of grunt going up hills but has some hesitation when its cold at low revs, it pings a bit at 4.5 grand on hot days driving up hills.
I'm just looking for 10% more power at higher revs and no 'cold' spots where it chokes a bit before getting going. I thought the dual sdraft webbers might give an overall improvement and not drink 15l/100k...current fuel use is 10.5l/100.

22R's are actually still used for racing in the US and Costa Rica. Google "22R race engine" and have a look.
