    Default ignition fire polarity GZE

can someone tell me how the waste spark is setup on a GZE

    IE
    CYL NO.1 + fire
    CYL NO.2 - fire
    CYL NO.3 + fire
    CYL NO.4 - fire

    or

    no.1 - fire
    no 2 - fire
    no 3 + fire
    no 4 + fire

    ETC ETC

Reason i ask is that i checked timing for the first time in a while yesterday and found that my no.1 cylinder is a - fire ( timing light wont work unless the spark lead is hooked up with the spark traveling from the motor to the coil.)

It has never been like this before as i have never had to hook the timing light up backwards. The only thing i can think of os that since installing the CDI ignition it has changed the polarity.

As it is my polarity is the same as my second example

AND YES I HAVE BEEN OVER ALL MY WIRING AND EVERYTHING IS WIRED CORRECT !!!

    Hi 30PSI,
Yeah I have the same thing with my timing light (I run a wasted spark setup on my AW11). HT voltage polarity doesn't matter for the engine of course. BUT current direction matters to you timing lights pick up circuit. Its just the timing light...it must have been designed to work only one way around. If its a problem just swap 1 and 4 at the coil.
    Cheers, Nick

I'm just wondering if there's something with the timing light pickup that gets confused by CDI... As far as I understand the waveforms are completely different.

Not sure if Im understanding the question 100% but if im right, when piston no 1 is @ TDC it'll spark whilst at the same time it sparks in cylinder number 3 (whilst both valves are open) to burn unused gas etc. and similiarly for cylinders 2 & 4.

Would be interested in knowing what it means to have the spark travelling the opposite way? I wouldnt't have thought this was possible the way the coils are designed??

    Hope this help

RPM016T, are you are confused? In wasted spark setups 'paired' cylinders share a double ended coil. The 'paired' cylinders are always 360 degrees seperated in the 4-stroke cycle. For every ignition event the coil fires for, a sparked is 'wasted' in jumping the other gap in the cylinder on its exhaust stroke. Since the pressure is low in the exh stroke cylinder, not much energy is used to break down this spark plug gap. So in 4cyls with 1342 firing order (nearly 100% of them) cylinder 1 &4 are paired and 2 &3 are paired.

I'm just wondering if there's something with the timing light pickup that gets confused by CDI... As far as I understand the waveforms are completely different.
The method of getting the coil to generate a spark are different, but there is still a spark and a corresponding 'current' during the spark. CDI sparks are shorter duration than inductive though.

    Cheers, Nick

Hmmm, I understand what you mean in the first part because i've been thru all that when I was using the standard ZE coil packs and I wired them into the wolf 3D. i.e. one spark firing in two different cylinder sequentialy. It was more that I was confused about the + & - polarity that 30psi was refering too...?

    Cheers

CDI will throw your timing light out something shocking.

Mine worked fine with normal ignition till I went CDI, then the whole thing went out the window.
