Default What type of diff have I got?

    Hi guys,

I've been told that the axle bit on my silver plate here (attached) should tell me what sort of diff I have. Apparently the last letter should be an A or a B, but I have a D. Can anyone help me out here?

    Cheers,
    Michael

I don't think so, but I'm not sure. It doesn't feel like LSD. The reason I even checked the plate was to see if I had LSD. When I saw that it was a D, I ended up even more confused.

    B01A 3.42 2 pinion open 7.5" ring gear
    B01B 3.42 4 pinion open 8" ring gear
B01C 3.42 2 pinion posi (OEM limited slip)

so i suppose logic follows that ..... edit.. what logic

if you jack it up and spin a wheel, the torsen will have little or no effect, but if you had one wheel on dirt, then it should work? if it spins freely, it is prolly not a clutch type.
ie, go somewhere with dirt/grass/slippery surface, accelerate a bit, see if it acts like an open diff (but rememer to get off the gas before that spinning wheel gets traction on the road...). if it just spins freely and you go nowhere, it is open. if you get decent forward movement, it could be torsen.
feel like pulling out? (or looking at the centre thru the oil plug?? ie look for the torsen gears or the clutch plates thru the opening in the side of the centre?)

Thanks. I'll give those tests a go on the grass.

Yeah that was another way of testing

Unfortunately it's kind of hard to get this car to break traction as the ETCS tries to smooth the power delivery out. I'll try stalling the auto up a fair bit though and then letting go. Hopefully we'll see 2 black lines behind the car.

no, don't do that.. thats stupid.

try it with one wheel on a loose/slippery surface to be able to work out if there is/is not LSD.

2 black lines is not a certainty anyways... open diffs can still spin both wheels, and sometimes LSD is too loose and can leave one black line...

and, it's just stupid to do that anyways....

OK, I won't do that then. I didn't realise it'd be a stupid thing to do. Just so I know in the future, how are you meant to take off at the drags if you don't stall it up?

I'll try out one wheel on grass and one wheel on the road soon.

    Thanks for the help.

no sorry i meant don't do a "standstill" as thats stupid and tells you nothing.. kills yout tyres and makes you look like a dickhead, etc etc

i wasn't referring to stalling it up etc (just for the record)

    \/\/\/\/ oops my bad

so i suppose logic follows that D is a 4 pinion LSD (ie torsen)
does a torsen have pinion gears?
The ones that I have seen have pairs of bevile gears, usually 3 pairs?

There's a lot of confusion surrounding the newer Toyota axle codes; I don't think anyone has come up with a definitive list explaining how it all works. This is the first time I've seen D in an axle code so I've got no idea what it means.

that covers old diffs (as does the other link above) but not the new ones, which have a new numbering code..

you think a supra/chaser is going to have the same sized diff centre as a KE10 corolla? (although i did see one site that said it was heh heh, 145mm diff.... behind a 1J/2J heh heh )
