Default 1990 Gt Four Celica, Second Gear crunches and grinds

    Hi All,

Currently in my celica, whenever you change to second gear is makes a weird crunching/grinding noise and then goes into gear.
What could be causing it and what do it do to get it fixed?
My mates think it could be a worn synchro or bushings.
If a gearbox rebuild is needed, where in sydney would be a good place to get it done?
    Thanks

St185's love to crunch second. Does it get better or worse depending on engine rpm?
Can't help with a shop as I'm based in qld. Depending on plans with the car it maybe worth hunting for a st205 gear box as their synchro are generally younger and a superior design.

Yeah it gets really bad if you are at high rpms, you need to slow down the car completely.
Might have to keep an eye out for a st205 gearbox! Pretty hard to come by tho :S

Sounds very much like your synchromesh has worn out. It happens on early E-series gearboxes because TOYOTA were still refining their oil-feed tubes.
Later E-series gearboxes are muc better and so are the replacement synchromeshes from Toyota.

If you can't find a spare ST205 box and find the re-build cost is prohibitive, you might want to consider which other E-series boxes have similar ratios.
There's plenty of them from camrys to Rav4's and many of them are boltes to S series engines and will bolt up with the all-trac transfer case.

Some have 13mm gear sets and others have 20mm - Do your research..

Gearbox interchange is not an easy job though.
