Unhappy 2.90 ratio t series diff centre origin

I put a post in general car talk about this centre back in January but have not had many comments. I was wondering what vehicle this 2.90 ratio I bought from a transmission repairer and installed in my stock RA28 housing would have been fitted in. thanks.

A vague memory tells me that rear Tercel diffs were 2.9 T series, with large axles a.la Kouki AE86 T series. So maybe the crown and pinion you got is from one of them.

But can the transmission repairer tell you?
I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

Never heard of a T series with 2.9 ratio. Whats it like to drive, does it struggle to get going? I have a gear set with 3.9 ratio if your interested...

t series 2.9 would have come from a celica gt4/ caldina etc

fyi they actually go as high as 2.27:1 (i have one - starlet awd)

thanks hen, no nobody in the transmission game I have asked including DIFF LAPPING in Brisbane could tell me. I put the whole centre in the housing and the axle splines fitted so I don't know what size axles the RA28 uses in comparison with the tercel. must be the same I guess.?

you can still spin the rear wheels T/A but it's not registered so I don't know what it's like through the gears on the street.

2.27 ratio, that's the highest final drive I've heard of in a car. I thought the 2.50 in some V8 commodores was pretty high. I think they run at about 1800 r.p.m at 100k.p.h in top gear don't they.?. what revs are you pulling at 100 k.p.h TEE ?.

Depends on gear train between motor gearbox and transfer case as to overall ratio. Must be a big total reduction though geartrain.

I'm yet to use the setup (wifes awd project car) - its from an ep85 awd starlet. basically "c" series gearbox with transfer case etc - baby gt4 celica stuff. yes it has a big reduction. from memory i think its effectively geared down to around 3.7-3.9:1.

2.92 T series large spline diff is from a live axle Tercel, around 1985 from memory. I have one in the TA22 housing fitted to my KP61 Starlet, swapped the centre for small axle to suit.

thanks for the information spikey. they must have a reduction through the transfer case you would think. I can't see why they would have such a high ratio in a vehicle meant to go off road, if only up to the snow ect. I will google this AE95 and find out more. thanks mate. AGO

They would definitely have a reduction gear, as the gear ratios are good for the motor it drives a 4AFE, I don't know why they chose those gear ratio's but it works, go onto the Ae95 facebook sites lots of nice Ae95 getting modified now.
