    Default Repainting head bolts

My mate wants to change the colour of his head bolts on his 5mge engine, I media blasted one of his old ones and the black coating comes off with ease. Does anyone have any idea what this coating is? is it black oxide or some such?

I was thinking about powder coating the bolt for him but my only concern with completely powdercoating the bolts would be they may chip when torquing down, obviously I could just coat the head of the bolt. Just wondering if there are any other potential issues.

By "Head Bolts" do you mean just the exterior bolts and studs on the outside of the head/cam covers? Or the actual bolts that hold the head to the block? (can't imagine why you'd want to paint those but just checking )

"IF" I was doing something like this, I'd be inclined to use electrolysis to coat them in copper, nickel or gold etc.. to keep the coating strong and uber thin.

I'd be wary of any "Paint" flaking off and gumming up the threads as you've mentioned.

Not its the actual bolts that hold the head to the block, he wants them to match the colour of all the other bolts etc on the engine. Hummm maybe just paint the top part of the bolt would be the only way..

Why paint bolts that are under the cam cover seems pointless
