Well I would love to be able to tell you the code but it seems my car was sold without a trans or diff. haha.

There is nothing stamped in the trans/axle line. :/ lucky me.
I'm kinda assuming its got the same diff as most the other crowns I've heard about. So an F series diff with 4.11 gears. Just a guess but. Not keen on pulling it apart to count teeth either.

Yeah I gave up half way through your thread and skipped to the end and started working my way backwards for a bit haha. Good to hear its what you want from your car now. It takes a lot of work to get it how you want haha

Nice build mate, sounds like it'll be a hoot.
For lockers, early hilux's (live axle front) ran G series front and rear. Later ones with IFS ran an F series front, G rear.
From memory, the early 3 litre 1KZTE hilux's between 97 and 04ish ran 3.7 diffs, and the later 1KD ones dropped to 3.5ish in the manuals, and 3.7 in auto. Would these be low enough for you?

I am looking for around 3.5 ratio. Thanks for the info! The diff will have to wait for a while but haha. Get the car running first.

Get a picture of your diff for me, especially the center, as some of the aus delivered vehicles in the 70's were assembled by AMI. And laws at the time required a certain percentage of Australian content for Toyota, datsun and other foreign manufacturers.
I know for a fact some MS85s were imported as CKD kits and assembled at AMI.
I had a 1976 CS MS85 as my first car, ran a Borg Warner 35 3spd auto and a borg warner diff. Yes it was one of the aforementioned.
If you have a borgie, then you have alot of ratios to choose from, commodore, falcon, valiant, which run tall ratios compared to Toyota.
I have a borgie 3.5 gearset, minispool center id let go for a fee if you're interested too.

My car does have (Or had) the AMI badges on the guards. Who knows if someone put them on or they are original. It was originally an auto, the previous owner swapped the gearboxes with another MS85 he had.
I tried to get pics of the diff but the damned cars too low! haha I have a shitty pic of the back of the diff but (most likely no use) Also it is a drum brake rear end for if that helps differentiate.

Same need here - I would really prefer to put som better ratio in my dif in my MS55 also running drums rear.
And the plate doesn't have a code for the diff.

Yeah I'm quite convinced its a toyota diff. I really need to get under the car and have a good look at it and take some photos. It's been too long since the cars been over the pit at work and I can't quite remember exactly what the diff head looks like to compare it with pics off google.
It does look low there haha Probably just the grass. It is low enough to scrape on EVERY speedbump though. No matter how you drive over it the chassis just behind the front wheels will scrape

Heres a good pic to show how it really sits

Had a bit of a play around with the speedhut gauges and began making up mounts for them.
There is going to be a lot of trimming and whatnot to make them fit but it should look good when its done (hopefully )
So what I did was pulled apart the factory gauges and am in the process of jamming the new gauges into the holes that the old ones came out of haha

    pulling it all apart

this is how they are going to be mounted

    How it should look

I am going to trim around the facia so the gauge rings aren't half hidden like they are now. Also going to paint the alloy mount plate black cause it looks shit as is.

Yes it looks like a jap diff, borgies had a center-in housing with a diff hat plate at the rear

Thanks for that Smokinsquirrel. So its back to trying to find the elusive lower ratios for a toyota 7.5inch diff haha. Oh well.

had a play with the gauges again today. I have another in its hole nearly there haha. Just 5 more gauges to go haha!! Silliness.

This is what the two gauges will look like The surround still needs a little more trimming but I am certainly happy with how they look so far.
