MX83 Cressida Gearbox Problems

Hi all,

Been driving around in my MX83 cressida for sometime now, but since the day I got it once in a while it will not go into 2nd gear (auto box of course) and then snap straight into 3rd and makes a big clunk sound like if one were to drop the clutch in a manual car.

I was told by a few mates that my gearbox oil was low, but when I checked the levels are all good.

Even when I use the auto shifter to choose 2nd, its just rides on 1st gear.

Any help would be appreciated, I've used the search button but seems like this problem is a first..

Hi, I think your solinoid for second gear is fried, try to check that thing first. If all the other gears are working fine than I will replace the solinoid first.

If the km on this gear box are over 280K than I will suggest to either replace the box, or rebuild it. As second gear is the usually the first one to show sign of wear and tear.

Yeah, 2nd gear solenoid i think. Infact just replace all the solenoids. Mine does similar only it doesnt change with low pressure, so it requires heat and revs....

I'm quite a noob to automatic boxes, but would replacing the solenoid require me to drop the box?

I was under the impression that either the kick down cable was stuffed or the gearbox computer was stuff (that's if cressida's have them).

I'll try to replace the 2nd gear solenoid next week see how that goes.

you can check it from gearbox computer. TSRM for supra is available online. The method is describes there. Basically you might see the OD light flashing, if you connect the T! and E1 pin.

once in a while my O/D light goes on.. I was told that is your diagnostic light...

your computer will than give you some sort of error code for your gearbox. And it will possibly tell you to change your solenoid. On toyotacressida.net a good discription of changing the solinoid is posted by RIbfeast (he is also a member here )

ok I kind have got an idea of how to change the solenoid..

but 1 question? which one is the 2nd gear solenoid.. I'm assuming its the one in the middle.

Also one more question, do I have to remove everything? or just the sump & filter is enough to reach the solenoid.. I've never done this before.. so I'm going to spend a weekend on it.

Yes I have, but its kinda vague on how to replace the solenoid, I have an idea of how to change it and I believe that the 2nd gear solenoid is the one by itself as its marked as no.2 on TRSM Online.

I'm going to try this out next weekend after my exam at uni and see how I go, if I'm successful I might as well make a guide on how to change it.
