    Default Tightarse eBay rods

    Finally decided to get my 4AGE rebuilt;
    Decided I want to run upgraded rod bolts, would go with stock rods but on the eBay I noticed there are a few places selling cheap 4AGE rods with ARP hardware;
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Toyota-4A...item2ebe4bf7bc

    Any idea if they are going to be better than smallport rods rezied with ARP bolts? Pricewise, probably not a whole lot between the two.
    Not going to be running over 8500rpm

    From the pictures they look alright and I've got a feeling these Taiwan rods are probably being sold under a few upper class brands for a lot more...
    I would be getting them sent with my block, pistons and main/rod bearings to ensure everything is within specification.

    Will be running OEM Toyota smallport pistons and pins, anyone see any issues there? Obviously the Toyota pistons wont have floating pins.

    spool conrods are 420, just get them checked and resized. they are tried n true.

    stock rods n pistons would be fine id think. if you get forged rods, ya may as well find a nice light set of forged pistons too.

    $420 is crap for something that needs more work done to it. I have Brian Crower rods that are not much more but are much lighter. Either that or I have some cheap rod bolts for sale.

    As for the ebay ones I don't know. How about Belfab?

    How bad can they be if you get them checked and resized?
    I wouldn't use them as is

    i havnt bought rods for a long time, when i was looking decent rods were about 1000$.

    i got told the spool rods where good, just need to be checked. im happy with mine.

    i would have still got the 1000$ rods checked too.

    I went Spool, mine needed to be sized. This is not necessarily a bad thing - cost feck all (80 from memory) and means that your components are matched to EACH OTHER..
    Not a big cost in the grand scheme of things...

    Then obviously the rods will be press fit.

    Yeah, press fit wrist pins (which I fucking hate)
    I don't know if anyone keeps stock pistons with aftermarket rods lol

    I might be the first but as it wont be seeing boost or (hopefully) lots of detonation I don't see any benefit for forgies when I wont be making lots of power etc

    I stuck with fresh GZE pistons on top of the SPOOLs, kind of wonder why now :b

    I am using original pistons and rods, making big power. OEM all the way.

    Personally, I wouldnt overcomplicate things with aftermarket internals, we are only talking about 100whp aren't we?

    Depends on the build really. ~190rwhp tends to require a bit more than OEM pistons and rods

    As for the eBay rods, the slew of them out there at the moment arent bad, ive built a couple of street engines with them. That said, if you are just doing something for the street i probably wouldnt bother much. Just clean up the rods you already have.

    Maybe i am missing something here, I thought DNEG was rebuilding an NA and not boosting it. Where does the 190whp come from?

    I am running 240whp on original rods and pistons @ 19PSI.

    My 190rwhp is NA. Im saying dont assume that because an engine doesnt have a turbo strapped to the side of it that it doesnt require beefier internals.

    remember marty, revs *generally* put more strain on internals than boost does.
