    Default 1JZ-GTE Gearbox help required.

    Hey,

    I've got an MX83 Cressida.
It has a 1JZ-GTE in it from a JZX81 Chaser (1991 model), including the 4 speed auto gearbox.
The gearbox has just cr*pped itself.

I need to know if I can put a 4 speed auto from any 1JZ front cut (eg a soarer) or do I have to source the gearbox from another JZX81?

I've been getting mixed messages from various mechanics..

If it has to be from a specific car, is there any other cars gearboxes that would be interchangeable. (Having a little trouble finding JZX81 gearboxes at the moment).

Just to note, the previous owner said that he thinks the gearbox is an A340E.
The plate on the box says it's a A341E though.

    Thanks heaps.

I would get another box the same. If it says 340e then thats whati would out back in. The supra boxes have more solenoids even though they have the same codes, so it would pay to have a good look at the loom and count the connection.

Just make sure the new auto has teh same amount in the same places.

Take a photo of the sensors on the passengers side, and also of the big plug at the rear.
From that you can determine which other boxes are useful.

Make sure you keep your old box as it may well be a case of swapping your sensors etc over to another box that may be the same mechanically but different sensors like the guys suggested. You could ask Jim of sideshow performance wiring or grant at Sixworks.Good luck with it.Cheers.Pete.

If you can i'd just wait for another box of the same type, they are cheap and plentiful and that way you've got peace of mind as it's just a straight swapover.

I just went through the same shit as your about to go through.
I tried for a 2 weeks to track down a chaser A341LE and most places hadn't seen one for a good 6 months.

What i found easyest to do is to track down a A340LE from a JZZ30 1JZ-GTE, then all you have to do is swap the loom off your old box (including taking the pan off to swap the solinoide wires). Then swap the extension housing off your A341LE and put it on the A340LE.

I got my box from SSS Automotive up here in NSW for $550.
And bobs your dads brother and off you go.

First of all, why did the existing box actually die?

they are pretty much similar but some have different speed sensors depending on what ecu it runs

if u get the one with the different speed sensors on the back of the box it can cost up to 500 dollars just in parts to adjust the signal from one type of box to suit the other

so in the end its better of finding correct box

Not if you have your old box still, just pull the extension housing of your old box, swap the two Cogs over (speedo and abs), put the old extension housing on the new box and off you go.

Ok so we know that the jzz30 and the jzx81’s use different boxes but what about jzx81 and jzx90? I have a jzx81 box spare and I have a jzx90 box in it now so I hope they are the same? Probably should have checked previously but it was cheap enough anyway and I wanted to practice doing a shift kit on it

The only difference between the JZZ30 box and JZX81 box is the loom, the JZZ30 box has connecters on the box and the JZX81 box has a loom.

    BUT
You can swap the loom off the JZX81 box and put it on the JZZ30 box, This is what i have done and it is running fine

The JZZ30 box, with the speedo sensor (the cog one), does that screw in like most? or does it bolt on?

Wierd wording I apologise, but can't really get across what I mean.
