Default Cleaning up valves - removing carbon build up

    Hi all,

I have a set of 4age 20v valves that need a clean up before I put them back into the head. Is there a quick and easy way of removing the carbon build up off the face of the valve, and also the back of the face where the stem starts?

I have read anything from oven cleaner to gasket remover will work, others say wire brush and time...

So who has first hand experience in cleaning valves? Should I just grit blast them?

    Cheers,
    Dave.

ive used oven cleaner and some scotch brite. worked well. There are little scotch bite pads you can buy that attach to a drill. those are sweet for cleaning things like valves, pistons etc

A nylon brush drill attachment works well on the valve faces. Gasket remover (which is basically concentrated paint stripper) is good for cleaning up light carbon on the stems.

I use oven cleaner on steel/iron parts (DO NOT use it on brass/copper/alloy etc parts!!)

For valves, I just give them a good scrub on a wire wheel with brass bristles on the bench grinder.
