fan speed control

my fan speed control switch is broken. when i flick it to 1, i hear something click, but the fan no work. as u go to 2 and 3 there is no difference, still no work. when i flick it to 4 it spins up. speed 3 used to work but then stopped all of a sudden.

to me it seems like the resistors have blown.

tomorow im going to the wreckers. what would i need to replace to get the fan working?

is it the fan or the switches or something else?

open her up and see whats busted first then replace whatever is not working properly. use your multimeter

any idea where i should be searching for busted bits?
would it be behind the switch panel? or on the fan?

that definetly sounds like the fan spped resistor is blown.

what sort of car we talking here? i know commodore ones are just one unit that cant have single resistors replace. maybe yours is the same. would be the easiest way to overcome the problem.

the reason why highest speed works is cause there is no resistor in that circuit and the fan receives full voltage to make it spin up fastest.....

^ sorry dude, forgot the most important detail. the car is a ae82 corolla.
im thinking of replacing the whole unit anyways. cbf replacing single resistors with the price of a whole unit(cheep)

ok, i been to the wreckers. its not the switch(red circle).


i will have a look at the relays and fuses and shit doen by the drivers kick panel. the wire seems to go in that direction.

edit: forgot to mention that the resistors are not in the switch

Are you aware that the resistors are not in the switch indicated above in red?

They are mounted inside you heater box and should be accessible just above the tunnel on either the drivers ort passenger side, but passenger side sounds right). There are three wires going to it in a T style connector configuration (with two verticals) and two screws holding it in there.

Once removed you will see two coils of wire (being the resistors) and they are mounted in the heater box to remove any condensation in there when on the lower fan settings.

You should find a replacement on any Toyota that has the same number of fans positions as yours.... good luck

Passenger side on the bottom of the fan blower, itll be near the kickpanel, have 6 wires going to it and be removable with 1 screw. Easy as to do.

takai you are wrong.
brian ra23 got it right (muchos rep for you). thing is i figured it out not 5 min ago, and came here to post what it was and where. if only i had jumped online at lunch time. ARRR. the dash was still i bits then. i actually saw them when i changed the heater core and thought, "wtf is that???"
so i put it all back together again and then relised they where the resistors. DAMMIT!

I think Takai was right, but refering to your earlier statement of looking for the fan relay, which he correctly describes.

Unlucky about the removing the dash for no reason though.

i dont have the users book that came with the ae82. i do have a after market manual(the ones where they take it appart and put it back together), but there is no mention of how to change the heater core, or the balist(SP?) resistor. they dont even mention where it is.

heres the procedure for anyone who needs to get at it:

there is one screw holding it in. you dont actually have to take ur dash apart to get it out. if you open the glove box you should see it. might even be able to remove it(if you got small hands). much easier to remove the glove box and get it out.
(to remove glove box undo screw on top left and right, and 2 screws holding in hinges at the bottom)

Nah, i was thinking fan resistor, but i had a brain fart and described the AE92 location. FWIW the resistor and relay are both on the blower box on an AE92
