Long ago, far away some guy came and said he wanted an RX-8 transplant. He then needed a rego, which implies new engine was to be euro3 or better eco class. This somewhat narrowed our selection.
A while later, there was a nice occasion with totaled GRX120 Mark X. And it looked like a perfect fit.
As it turned out later, we were lucky to have a GRX120 wreck, its engine has no immo. There are some minor differences with IS250 engine (for which you easily find a diagram on the web), most noticeably o2 sensors and MAF.
One more noticeable difficulty was power steering and gauges. In RX8, power steering controller uses CAN bus to receive RPM data from engine ECU. As long as RPM=0, power steering is off.
Gauges is the same story. Rather than developing custom CAN controller (which isn't impossible, there are some Mazda-related examples on the web) we decided to fool stock ECU. After doing most straightforward things we were left to only RPM problem.
Which in turn has 2 solutions: weld crank gear and sensor off RX8 to poor little 4GR. Or build some kind of simulator. My idea with the latter was to take transmission input shaft RPM signal and modify it to have "missing teeth" as per RX8 service diagram. This worked, with some minor concept improvements.
