Default Tyre size for mx32 cressida (14x8/14.8.5) *added Vicroads legal information*

    Hi all,

Just after some advice on what size tyres you guys would run (or have run) on rims that are 14x8 (front), and 14x8.5 (rear)? The car is an mx32 cressida.

I'm after something that looks good and will handle well. I'm unfamiliar with 'stretching' tyres but it seems like more of a look than any help, in fact it seems like it would have more negatives than positives? Plus I need it to be legal.

    Cheers.

What kind of offsets are the wheels? Not sure it would be legal anyway haha

What size are your standard wheels and tyres? 14x5.5 185/75?

You can use a tyre calculator to guage what kind of tyres you can run and what the effects will be on your speedometer and odometer
    http://www.willtheyfit.com/
    http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
and then google it to see if it looks good

Although, in the end, getting it legal and close to stock rolling diameter will maintain some of the driving behavior but won't look as good as a lower profile with stretch.

Wider tyres, tramlines like a bitch, rubs like a bitch blah blah blah you'll figure it out soon enough I'm going to let someone else who is experienced with stretching talk.

    For anyone interested.
    Ended up getting 185/55R14.
Looks fine to me, tyre shop said its fine also.
I'm not a dumbass so regular maintenance of the car comes as second nature to me (what i'm saying is i'll keep an eye on tyre pressures, sidewall conditions etc).

I could of got 225/50R14 in a toyo, but they are $320 each. The tyres I got are Kumho ecsta ku31.

Wow that's going to be stretched! I had 185/50 on a 6.5 and still thought the profile was too small. Can't wait to see it. How low are you going

No way i would think thats officially legal ?? plus the sidewalls will be that stretched it probably wont grip that well either unless the tryes are really sticky .. Time will tell i suppose ..

Yeah man, it's definitely not legal. But neither are the wheels. They are a fairly sticky tyre however. I'll be keeping a close eye on things, and the stockies can be put back on if it gets defected.
having spoken to a few people who have been running this sort of set-up for years I'm really not that worried.

    Extra Information:

I spent a little bit of time reading various Vicroads documents and wading my way through jargon to find actual answers. According to the Vicroads RWC Requirements document:

Tyre sizes must be compatible with rim sizes as set out by
    the Tyre and Rim Association.
Now if you go to the Tyre and Rim association page, you cannot see the information as you are required to purchase the manual (Designed for RWC testers/workshops to purchase). The manual is $57.20.
So I can base my conclusion of whether or not the tyre size for the rim is legal only by looking at a manufacturers website or by calling vicroads (maybe I'll do this out of interest). I'm already sure that the tyre is illegal for the rim size as most recommendations for 185s on manufacturers websites are that they go on 6.0 rims widths or thereabouts.

Moving on to track width: (from rwc vicroads document)

In the case of passenger cars and light goods vehicles,
the track measured to the centre of the tyre treads must
not exceed the original specification by more than that
specified for that type of suspension in VSI 8.
Now I go to VSI 8 and have a read: (screencap from vsi8)

Ok my track width is illegal as the new rims are 8.0 and 8.5. So I figure if my whole combination is illegal then its pointless having a legal tyre, and anyway a legal tyre might scrub somewhere, which is also against the VSI 8 and RWC guidelines.

So in conclusion, nearly everyone who modifies cars will have illegal wheels, the track width increases really are not much.

Police in australia hate anything that isnt a camry/magna/excel etc....
these days, the rule of thumb is:

1 Keep original items in your shed
2 Drive your awesome car the way you like it
    3 Get a defect
4 remove parts, replace with stock
    5 clear defect
    6 Modify car again + Step 1
    repeat
