Re-assembling MA61 rear hubs - hub to backplate distance needed

An engineering questions for you folks: Assembling rear hubs from an MA61.

I started to put MA61 (in my RA65) rear hubs back together recently - and got as far as step 10 in the TSRM.

Am stuck at the 4th picture as it requires a puller/SST that I don't have.

Should I:
- make up something that does the same job as the SST that pulls the outer flange/shaft into the hub?
- or find/make a press and push the outer flange/shaft in the hub bearings?

As far as I can make out, if I rest the inner drive flange on the base of a press, and then push the outer flange in/down, it should be exerting the same kinds of forces on the bearings/hub?

I decided to throw caution to the wind and made a simple hydraulic press. And now I need a dimension/measurement to finish this task off (or un-munt it).

Am after the outer-hub-to-backing-plate distance, e.g. this:

Hi Charles, The stub axel is pressed all the way onto the outer bearing untill it will go no farther.
This distance to the back plate is pre set at the factory.
There should be a crush tube between inner and outer bearing, like a diff pinion.
The inner flange and nut is then tightened to a pre load like a diff pinion.
