Default 1JZGTE Water Pump removal... A question or 2...

    Hello All,

With the 1JZGTE Water Pump Removal and refitting, it is possible to remove the pump without removing the timing belt cover or do I have to remove the timing belt cover? Also do I need to remove the timing belt off the engine to do it?

Thanks all who answer the question...

yes. that is the short answer.. and its a pain in the a$$ to do..

save yourself pain, and do the timing belt, tensioner pulley etc while you are there..

unless of course all of it is brand new or something..

So I've got to pull off the timing belt to do the water pump...

I've already replaced the timing belt 50kms ago... before I dropped the engine in...

i got mixed reports from this but it was basically along the lines of "the water pump is a PITA to replace and you have to take off pretty much the front of the engine to do it, while you are there you make it easier by taking off the timing belt, if you are taking it off, you may as well replace it as well"
I have also been led to believe (reliable source of someone who has actually done it) that there are 2 o rings that don't coeme with the pump from toyota that you need to get from CBC or whatever, so take them down and match them up.
I am upp for this on My GF's car and have all the parts ready to do it, her car is on 94K and i will be doing it next oil change and doing a write up then.
    stay tuned.

ps I had a thread about parts required for it floating on here somewhere, "100k service" is a good search i think

yup. Have to pull it off.

the timing belt and the timing belt covers (front and rear)

I was going to do it too when I changed my timing belt.. but decided that it was a slut of a job, and I'd do it when it was needed.

50Kms? ie barely even moved the car? or 50000kms
if the former just take it off and put it back on
if the latter....umm if you don't replace it you will be doing it again in another 50000kms instead of 100000kms

tis a sucky job.. there is a big o-ring behind it, that should come with it.. and two on the pipe that slots into the top of it.. mine were fine so we just slapped them back in

we did it in mine with no radiator/support etc in it and it was still a pain in the ass.. especially if your engine bay is tight around the turbo's etc..

Definantly have to remove the timing belt and rear cover, but its not that bad to do!
I didn't bother replacing the whole rear assembly as well (mine wasn't leaking), so i carfully seperated the new front and rear halves (saving the gasket) and replaced only the front half - very easy!

Depending on the bodyshell its fitted to, the whole job is actually quite pleasent to do, plenty of room and it all fits together nicely.

I havn't ever had a rear housing fail or start to leak, although I have always managed to sell my brand new rear half to people who have had problems, so maybe it would be best to replace the whole lot while you're there, but you can always make that descision when its in bits.

Just take your time and don't try to take shortcuts - as always, the "hard way" is often the easy way
