    Default E-series transmission interchangeability

    Hi,all

I need a 5-spd FWD transmission. I have looked at some gearboxes, and identified the E51 from '88-'89 MR2 as the best cadidate 'box for my purposes. But I would like the lowest 1st gear ratio and the tallest 5th - the E53's 1st (3.538:1 vs. 3.23:1) and E153's 5th (0.731:1 vs. 0.82:1). I could also use the E58 from a Levin/Trueno, as its bell housing and ratios are similar to the E51. E52 has exactly the same gear ratios as E51, albeit a different bell housing, but does that guarantee they are mechanically identical?

I know that E58 is a narrow-gear tranny, while E51 is a wide-gear tranny. Are any gear sets of these four 'boxes interchangeable without mods? Will a E58 bell-housing bolt up to E53 or E153, in the event of me not finding an E51?

    TIA

Wish I could help, but sounds like you've done more research on E-series than anyone I know..

The lowest first gear ratio is 3.833 in the E57F5 gear box from the COROLLA AE95 4WD WAGON.

I have no idea about interchangeability though..

E series E51/52 are very similar just with different gearing.
Bell housings can be swapped. E58 items are not compatible with E51/52.

E51 has the MR2 gearing which has a low first gear compared to the E52 which has the same ratios as the E58.
Some E52s had the same ratios as the E51 as well.

I've seen all those threads - no good.

But I did find out that E51 and E52 use similar bearing kits. Maybe...

    Hey, terryo.

Any chance you could give me the full url? It keeps taking me to a MR2 web ring. Appropriate, but tedious.

    Thanks

    I have a crazy idea.

Imagine taking such a transmission, and bolting it up to a Cressida 3.0 lt 24 valve engine (7M-GE), or even a 7M-GTE!

Then put it in said Cressida, add a diff to the front (still working that part out), have a set of gears cut for the E-series final drive, which will be the inverse of 4th to yield a direct drive 4th, and connect. AWD!

I think it would be awesome. And a LOT lighter than using the Hilux transfer case, which bolts straight on to the 21R tranny, but doesn't have a centre diff, and adds a lot of unnecessary mass with its low range.

Even better, if I could add a 50:50 torsen diff to the front and rear, and a 40:60 (F:R) torsen to the E-series. Candidates in SA are Mazda MX5 or Toyota Fortuner. LSD? Bah, who needs it?

Except maybe it won't even be Cressida.

Maybe it won't even be a Toyota...

OK, so I've been looking around, and it seems that here in my neck of the woods, the E-series transmission will be near impossible to find. A good second option might be the S50, which came in the Camry. The S50 also has very similar ratios to what I could have assembled from 3 different E-series 'boxes.

    E-series dream 'box: 3.538, 2.045, 1.333, 0.972, 0.731;

    S50: 3.538, 2.041, 1.322, 0.945, 0.731.

It makes more sense in terms of geared speeds.

BUT, If I gather correctly, the S50 looks like the E52, with the starter on the transmission side rather than the engine side. So, instead of trying to buy 3 different (very rare) E-series, can't I just buy a E51 and bolt its bell housing onto a (much easier to find) S50 'box? Or perhaps the E58 bell housing will work better?

Speaking of E-series and S-series, are there any visible markings by which to identify each transmission? I doubt I'll be allowed to take all of them apart to count the teeth on the gears and calculate the ratios...

    Thanks again

all E code boxes I've seen have 2 pipes that connect to the optional oil cooler. The S code box is not good for high torque engines

Rising sun, I've rung a few toyota wreckers in Melbourne and they all had at least 2 E153's (mcv20 camry) in stock ranging from $500inc to $600inc GST. You'd obviously need to add shipping but these also came with some limited warranty on its operation. Change the linkage around and say its from an SW20 and they want $1100inc GST +...

It came from a Camry, which is by no means a small, light car. How bad could it be? I'm not sure whether it came in the turbodiesel Rav4 as well. I'm not sure what transmissions served in the Rav4, quite frankly...

Thanks, but I'd also have to add import duties and exchange rate. I could buy 3 E-series for the final price...
