Hi TRS,
Apparently the A-series denotes 'automatic transmissions'
This wikipedia list shows an A-series for one Rav4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_A_transmission
A540H
Applications:
1989-1991 Camry (4-cyl AWD)
1996-1999 RAV 4 (4x4)
Gear ratios: 1st - 2.810:1 2nd - 1.549:1 3rd - 1.000:1 4th - 0.734:1 Rev - 2.296:1
(This particular version has a weak reverse - prone to noise and failure - failure included problems with 1st brake)

As far as i know.. (correct me if I'm wrong)
All the E-series boxes belong to toyota's with manual transmissions... FWD's, the all-trac system. (and maybe some early mid-engined MR2's)
Roughly speaking off the top of my head, that's MR2's, celica St -series, Rav4's, some camry's and AE95 wagons and sedans.
I was basing my thoughts for a 6 spead AE95 4WD wagon on this thread here:

There a listing there for a Rav4 EA6xF
