Gearbox like everything else just seemed to be made for this car. Ideally, as the dude in tahiland had intended, it should sit a little further back, or more biased towards to rear because at it sits, clearance with the front console ie. radio etc is going to be a squeeze.

Stripping the halfcut to get it a little tidier for house inspection

I opted to mount the engine further forward as mentioned earlier to avoid bigger headaches like clearing steering rack, master cylinder, and huge mods to the sump.

UPDATE ON PROGRESS: Its been about a week or 2 now that ive been stuffing around with the cooling system. Trying to decide whether to run hydro fan or electric fans, whether to run volvo radiator or toyota radiator, exploring what combo's may work in terms of fitment and performance etc etc. to keep costs to a minimum. Decided the massive hydro fan could not be beat by any electric fan so opted for that, and the smaller volvo radiator. Radiator, turns out, works differently on lolvo's. Pain in the arse, they have no radiator caps :S
So all the pressure was being contained in the overflow bottle which has a release valve in it. Not nearly enough for the heat coming off this 6 banger.
So thought bugger it. Cranked out the 12" angle grinder and got busy on the lolvo's front. Mounted the toyota radiator and hydro fan and they sit pretty mint! pretty dang close to the pulleys but mint.

Was having trouble with the engines idle also. Seemed to sit at what sounded like 3k rpm, which was not pleasant without an exhaust. So, made a temporary exhaust system, filled the coolant back up again, took off the ISCV, cleaned it, and now about to run it again to see if its happy.

Once we get a reasonable idle speed, and less noise than a rock saw we'll be singing! It'll mean back to sorting/neatening the wiring again. And a driveshaft.

Update: Still not complete. ISCV is still giving me the shlits so i'm etching toward ditching it. I must have snipped a wire somewhere along the line as the ECU is just not grounding the stepper motors coils. Still waiting for exams to be over with.
Once I get some decent free time, will be having a tailshaft made up. Going to cost ~$200.

In the meantime, i've been messing about with some rims and shiz.

Howzit folks, so this is the stage we're at for the moment.

Tailshaft is at the shop, and my mate Michael Ratcliffe is going to wire up a manual ISCV for me. We're using an infinite switch that he bought from Jaycar and modified (not sure what you might call it) So now, like a farm ute, i can adjust the idle from in the cabin. He's keen to wire in a micro processor so that it'll have some pre-settings. (May consider it down the line).

Can't wait to get this puppy on the road. Keen to find out what the ratio's are going to be like.

So, now, its just little things that need doing like gauges and a bit of interior bits to go back in.

    Some clearance pictures:

There was heaps of room to play with, and I really admire those guys who fit these engines into e30's. That is phenomenal. Volvo engine bays tend to be wider than longer and would suit a 1uz quite beautifully. My intentions are to find a narrow intercooler to run down the bottom, below the a/c evaporator. A/C would be a nice luxury
Seeing that i mounted it a bit further forward, there's not a mass of space longitudinally. As can be seen in the pic just above this post.

You can see above, why it took so long to decide on a suitable cooling solution. I wanted to run the volvo radiator as it would fit a lot easier and leave heaps of room for a condenser and front mount. Eventually it proved better to get the angle grinder out, and mount the chasers rad in there instead with the whopping hydrofan. Should keep him nice and cool here in the desert

Also trying to think of ways to hide the bolt on spacers. hmmmm. I want to avoid any unnecessary attention from our friends in blue.

Below, you can see why I was content with mounting it further forward. Although this looks perfect, it would have been more suitable if it were biased toward to rear, since its going to be pretty tight with the headunit just above my hand in 1st and 3rd. Will probably have to make some adjustments for that when we put it all back together again.

could try get a modified shifter with a slight dog leg in it to have it sit further back... positioning definitely doesnt look horrible.. but its hard to tell without the trim in there

love projects like this... good stuff...

most shifters can be warmed up with the oxy and then bend in a suitable (small) dogleg. bigger ones require a bit more work, i had a mid-shifter box in my mx83 (needs a rear shifter box) and made up my super-short-shift with a big dogleg to bring the stick back out in the right position... this worked well for years and ill probably keep it even though i put a new rear shift box in it last night

its a 3 piece jobie, pinned and tig'd together. the stick is about 60-70 back from the pivot ball, ill get some pics if you want.

Cheers Blakeg! Yea he's a 760. Quite a rare car in this nick of the woods. Turbo, and manual. Auto's are preferred here in Arse-tralia, so it seemed a pity to ruin this one

AFAIK the only external difference between 760's and 740's was the chrome grill on the 760 and lack of mudflaps. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a black squared grill. Looks noiice. and a front lip (see first pic)

Cool Re: 1jzgte VOLVO 760 sedan build thread

Don't think i've mentioned in the thread anywhere that I had to take the front sway bar out for the sump to fit. The 1j had to be a front sump in order to clear the x-member, and this meant, the sway bar would have to go right through the middle of the pan.
So up till now, I took it out and thought i'd deal with it later. My thoughts are to mount it 'behind' the x-member now at exactly the same distance and level as before; just rotated 180 degrees. I figured it should work no differently, just as long as it doesn't get in the way of any other suspension gear.
So, in the process of doing that at the moment.

To get the sump to fit, modifications had to be made to the rear of the pan....With a hammer.

Howdy folks, Just got back from OS holiday. Had ATS make up a tailshaft for me before i left. Cost $200 to cut n shut.

So engine is running perfect, just havn't put it on the road yet as we're still fiddling with getting a tach working before putting all the loom away neatly.

Kinda over cars atm. Bikes are so much more fun and easier, and faster, and beautiful. Just bought an 01 R6 so if someone comes with the money for Douglas, i'm happy to see that lolvo go unfortunately.

This is great! Don't forget to wear some sort of wide brim hat when taking the doors of commonwhores.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I've put it on the backstreets twice now just to get things right. Feels alot different to how it used to, its quite strange, like driving a totally different car, altho its the same :S
Feels cool sitting in something that you've built yourself. hahah

So anyway, this is how the shifter sat originally:
    in 3rd gear

    neutral

    4th

I thought this wouldn't work so I did this:

actually ended up welding it shut for added strength and rust prevention. Anyone want to criticize...go ahead, but it felt strong and worked minta!

    end result (neutral)

Another thing Mike (my neighbour) and I have been doing is finishing off the dash cluster wiring. I think i mentioned earlier that he was trying to wire up a microprocessor to pickup the toyota rpm frequency and convert it and calibrate it to the volvo one but with no success, so we ditched the idea and just installed the chaser dials in the volvo cluster. Needed a bit of trimming but it sits pretty well i think. Officer plod wouldn't know the difference.

Tried keeping it nice and neat in the rear and inside

The temp guage, tach and speedo are from the chaser and the boost guage is just a cheepy from ebay.
